African-American Marriages of 1866 - 1873

This is an existing list of declarations of marriage of Negroes and Mulattos from 1866-1873. These will show the husband's full name, the wife's first name, (seldom her maiden name), how many years they had been married and the date of declaration. For those of you unfamiliar with this - after the emancipation of the slaves, the Black married couples were required to come to the courthouse and give the above information. These were recorded in special books and bonds had to be posted. Many times, the individual posting bond (surety/security) were their former owners. Their names are not shown.
