Smith

I too have a 'brickwall' researching my Smith ancestral family of Adair County.  Of all my Adair County ancestral families, this has been my most difficult one to research.  Any help after many years of research will be
extremely appreciated.  I have researched just about every Smith family of Adair County; but, have yet to connect with any of them.  I have surmised that members of my Smith ancestral family left Adair County in
the 19th century and I have never 'heard tell' from any of my Smith cousins!  I hope that will change.
What I know is that my second-great-grandmother, Lucilla Smith Bryant (ca. 1806-after 1882), is the daughter of George (ca. 1775-ca. 1837) and Jane Smith (ca. 1781-after 1849).  Two of George and Jane's daughters
married sons of early Adair County pioneers, John (ca. 1760-ca. 1841) and Elizabeth Bryant (ca. 1766-ca. 1854).  Lucilla was the wife of Daniel Bryant (ca. 1803-ca. 1891).  Elizabeth Jane Smith (ca. 1810-1869),
Lucilla's sister, married Samuel Bryant (1808-1897). I would like to learn more information about the ancestors, famiily, and descendants of George and Jane Smith.  George and Jane probably married
in North Carolina.  The George Smith family was probably among the early pioneers of Adair County history.  The George Smith family probably lived along Powder Mill branch according to early deeds I have seen.  George
died in Adair County and Jane possibly died in Adair County as well. Does anyone know where George and Jane's graves are?  I suspect that their graves may be on their old homeplace farm near Powder Mill branch.
Does anyone know where Powder Mill branch is?
My lineage includes:
I.    George and Jane Smith.
II.   Lucilla Smith Bryant.
III.  Mary Margaret Bryant Grider (1846-1936).
IV.   Daniel Marion Grider (1888-1949).
V.    Katherine Louise Grider Lepiarczyk.
VI.   Erwin Heinrich Lepiarczyk II.
It will be a distinct pleasure to communicate especially with descendants of George and Jane Smith.  May God bless all members of the George Smith family always. E. H. Lepiarczyk, sir_erwin@yahoo.com

Calhoun

I am looking for a birth certificate or any other information that would place KIRT CALHOUN into the correct family: KIRT CALHOUN b.Feb. 1875-1879, Adair Co. KY, d. Apr 8 1917 Kaufman Co. TX
I THINK: he is a son of JOHN C. CALHOUN & SARA BURBRIDGE These Calhoun's lived near the Adair Co. Russell Co. line. I KNOW FOR SURE: that he is the grandson of GEORGE W. CALHOUN b.1846,
Adair Co, & VENETTA CONOVER b. 1847-1848, KY and the gr grandson of James Calhoun b. abt 1775 in NC, d. Adair Co KY. I know for sure that his uncle was GEORGE MILTON CALHOUN Adair/Russell Co.
I think that "KIRT" is a nick name and this brings me to my brick wall. I have lots of information about this family but am just not able to place KIRT for sure with the correct parents. I have been trying to break this brick wall for 10+ years! I know for sure that the CALHOUN family was close to and married into the WOLFORD, HUDSON, BURBRIDGE families from Adair and Russell Co. "ADITIONAL INFORMATION" if needed Since Kirk Calhoun died young, he didn't leave much of a paper trail, so I decided to follow George Milton Calhoun, his cousin. (Their father's were said to be brothers) George Calhoun and Kirt Calhoun migrated from KY to TX together and lived in the same places. George's father (WILLIAM L (Levi) CALHOUN) died in Russell/Adair when George was 12 (1877) and George went to live with Kirk's family for a while and then his mother married Josiah (Joe) Hudson and lived in Russell Co KY. GEORGE MILTON CALHOUN married MAGGIE WOLFORD (from Adair)who was his
first cousin. George's mother, ELIZA E WOLFORD, was the sister to Maggie's mother. George and Kirt moved to Garland, Dallas Co.TX, (from Russell/Adair Co. KY), They both then moved to Kaufman Co. TX.
Kirt m. HATTIE CAROLINE COOMBS abt 1904 (I think in TX can't find marriage lic) and they lived and had children in Kaufman Co. TX where Kirt died. Kirt is buried in Radar Cemetery. Any help would be greatlly apreiciated. Judy Bresch breschs@hotmail.com

Franklin

I have a typed copy from the Columbia Spectator, Adair Co., July 17. 1888 describing a murder suicide.  It begins:  On Monday of last week, Elias Franklin shot and killed James B. Brent, near Munfordsville.  It
then relates the circumstances and describes him fleeing to  a barn near Sulphur Wells, Metcalfe, Co. where he committed suicide. Ostensibly this was over his sense of an affair between Brent and  his wife, a second wife, named Margaret.    There are supposedly two other newspaper accounts of this in other publications. Was there an
obituary?  I would like to know the name of his second wife, when they married and what happened to the body of Elias Franklin.  His parents and first wife Susan Kemp were buried in the local cemetery.  Was he
also?  I know what became of some of his children by his first wife, Rosetta, Willie, Mary and Emma, but not his second wife or the sons by his second wife, William Jesse and Samuel Edward. Does anyone know about this incident and what happened to members of the family? Thank you, Shirley Maul (wife of a descendent) shirleymaul@optonline.net

Elmore

I would like to post a follow-up on a posting that I had submitted last year, re: George Elmore, Adair Co. (born 1750 Richmond Co. VA). McGlasson

I am searching for any information about my Great Grandmother Myrtle McGlasson (maiden name England ?). I think I have found her Father, Albert England who was born & raised in Adair County. I have census records for him for the years 1850 & 1870. His Father was Daniel England. My research leads me to think that he had two wives. The first was Luvisa J McKinney who would be my Great-Great-Grandmother. His second wife was Mary Eva (?). I have my Great-Grandmother's Obituary and at the time of her death (1959) she had three surviving relatives. A half sister, Mrs. Roy Branstetter who lived in Madison, Indiana; 2 half brothers Claude and Jessie England who lived in Park, Kentucky. Any information that you would have would be greatly appreciated, Gary Hudson gsh_46506@hotmail.com

Arnold Cemetery & Heirs of the Hancock Estate in 1962

I talked to the US Corps of Engineers last week and they told me that the members of my dad's family were first buried in Arnold Cemetery before they were moved to Mt. Carmel when the Green River Dam was built.  Does anyone know anything about Arnold Cemetery? Also, in 1962, my dad received a letter from an attorney in Columbia re. his being one of the heir to the Hancock estate.  At that time, I had no idea of trying to trace my family and the letter has been gone a long time.  Can anyone give my any info where I should try to go to get a copy of this?  I sure appreciate all of your help.  Sandra H. Leach

I am interested in a family named Leach who lived in Adair County until at least 1952. They had a farm out Greensburg road and the men were named Alonzo and Gaither Leach. Their mother was there also and at that time
wheelchair bound. She told me (as a small child) not to go near an old house off a ways in a field, but in site of their farmhouse. She said it use to be the poor house and was haunted. I don't know if this is true or merely an attempt to keep me away from an unsafe place.  My grandfather on my mother's side of the family was a Leach and I now believe these Leaches were related to him since and old picture of my grandfather with these two brothers has surfaced. Anyone know of them? Thanks Robbie  Turner Garrison, wina403@wmconnect.com

Humphrey

My grandfather was John James Humphrey, born 1873, married Mary Rufus Hancock in 1896.  My Dad was Perry Cabble Humphrey, born 6/8/1907.  He left home when he was 16 and never went back so I never knew any of his family.  He was one of 6 children. In a pamphlet I once saw a list of occupations for people in Adair County that were there about the turn of the century. There was things like a doctor, a pharmacist, etc.  There weren't very many things listed but at the end was "John James Humphrey wagon maker".  This would be my grandfather.  John James Humphrey in later years lived in a hotel in Knifley and I believe was killed there. (according to a now deceased 3rd cousin.) I am looking for any information on this family! Thanks, Sandra Humphrey LaVigne sldelights@aol.com

King

My ancestor is ELI KING born 14 April 1792 North Carolina (according to 1850 census), died 15 Oct 1857 Hendricks Co., IN; buried Danville East Cemetery, Danville, Illinois.  1850 U S Census for Washington Twp., Hendricks County, Indiana lists:     KING, Eli, age 58, farmer born NC;  Julia Ann, age 28 born KY; Nancy, age 20 born KY; Wesley, age 17 born KY; Sally, age 25 born OH; David, age 1 born IN and  Eli F., age 3 1/2 born IN

I also have death cemetery record showing burial.  However, have never been able to trace this Eli King in Kentucky; have no records of his parents, siblings, spouse, etc. Of those listed in this 1850 census, I feel that Julia Ann, Nancy, and Wesley are his children.  Have found Wesley in another state with wife and family.  Sally was his daughter-in-law, David and Eli F. her children.  Her husband, Eli King #2, was the father of the two boys and died
prior to this census report.  In fact he died the day before son Eli F. was born.  Since there are three "ELI's" I have always assumed that was the first name, however, since I am always hitting the brick wall, I now wonder if perhaps Eli born 1792 might have been an Elijah, Elihu, etc. Can you help with Kentucky records.  I did find one Eli King who married a Nancy Crawford Nov 14, 1813 in Adair County, KY, but have found no other records to substantiate who this Eli King is.  Thank you so much for your assistance.
