Dr. John J. Dickey Diary, Fleming County, Ky. Recorded in the 1870's and beyond. Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 10, No 3 - August, 1995, p. 85. By permission. Laurel County. Mrs. Lilly Wooton White Goose Creek, Ky., June 10, 1898. The Wootons are of English origin. The brothers came from England in the very early part of the 18th century and settled in North Carolina and bought 1800 acres of land but they afterwards removed to Wilkes Co., Georgia. The sons of one or both of these men were: Richard, Thomas, James and Lemuel (Samuel?). I have no account of what became of the latter two. They married Smiths. Richard, my great grandfather was a commissioned officer in the Revolutionary War. I was born in Ringold, Georgia, near Chickmauga [sic] Battle Ground. In a correspondence with Mrs. L. Scifert of New York City, I have learned that Lord Wooton of England was in Peerage, that she was fourth in descent of him. She said there was a fortune of $100,000.00 to be distributed now, and she was tracing the Wootons. The residence of George W. Childs of Philadelphia was called by Lewis Wooton. I would like to know how (I am). I am assured that Col. Wooton of Revolutionary fame was wealthy and influential. My mother was a Wells, her mother a Caldwell of South Carolina, a relative of John C. Calhoun. My mother was at John C. Calhoun's funeral. Wooton White Smiths Scifert Childs Wells Caldwell Calhoun = England NC Wilkes-GA NY PA SC
