Wages were paid by giving credit to the company store. Out of the above was deducted 25 cents a month for burial insurance,  $1-$1.50 for lights in their homes, $2-$5 for monthly rent for a shack, (see photos under Bell) also $1 month for medical, paid company doctor. If they chose cash instead of credit to the company store, then it was just paid at the rate of 75% of what they made.  That's what Tennessee Ernie sang about "Owe my soul to the company store."  The company store prices were 25% to 50% higher than a town store. The above was at an hourly rate of 20 cents per hour.

The miners would take their sons in to help them load coal since it was done by shovel and they were paid by the ton. *E.C. and C. E. Bowlin had different check numbers--check were brass tags that were put on loaded coal cars so they could get paid for loading them.  Every miner had a different number.
