Grubbs, Mr. Claybourne

Kentucky the son of the late Grant and Emily Collett Grubbs was born in Bell
County, Kentucky November 4, 1914 and departed this life in the Pineville
Community Hospital on Sunday January 9, 2005. Claybournes life spanned many
experiences. Like many young men, he was caught up in the activities of World
War II, crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth troop ship and taking part
in ground battles in France, returning to the States with a Purple Heart. He
spent many years in the coal mines, operations for Sun Crest Bottling Co., a
stint with a sporting goods company, a contract mail Carrier, and a furniture
finisher before retiring. Claybourne had a profound love for the outdoors.
Nearly every day was spent hiking the beautiful mountains of this area, or the
paths in the parks. His longevity can be attributed in part to the rigors of
his outdoor pursuits. He could challenge nearly anyone half his age to keep
pace with him. He was an avid small game hunter, and could coax nearly any
plant to grow. Mr. Grubbs was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2
