Bracken County Maps

1871 Map Showing Landowner Names
1884 Atlas map showing location of Felix Chapel Baptist Church

These are scaled down from a huge map that we bought copies of from the Bracken County Historical Society in 1997 or 98 when we were staying at the Lamplighter Inn for three or four days doing on site research.

We went specifically hoping to find my greatgreat grandmother's grave...and decided it was lost forever in what was purported to be an old Negro grave behind Felix Chapel Baptist Church [gtgrmthr was not Negro, but perhaps went to the church closest to her home? Her name was Nancy PYLE EDMONSON. If she was buried in the Augusta Cemetery, it must have been one of those hillside graves which have washed away.

What is attached is just a portion of the large map. I'm not sure how to work with it. At least this gives some names and locations.

What may be of value to people is to see their ancestor's name...and where they lived approximately [which quadrant] of Bracken County. I believe it was the historical society that was selling the maps. My uncle and I bought several of them when we were in Bracken County in 1998 [and I was there for several years in a row while we were back every spring caring for my husband's mother in Clermont County, Ohio.

The map sections were for my own use trying to chase several families; PYLE, CASE, ENSOR, CROSBY or CROSLY...and others...so basically what one needs to do is fold the map in half and then in thirds. The top halves I called 1[or A] 2 [or B] 3 [or C] and the bottom half left to right 4 [or D] 5 [or E] and 6 [or F].

Catherine Serrot Pyle and Thomas Ensor
Gleanings from Census and Land Records

My ancestors lived on Big Bracken Creek...and probably walked up the hill toward the east of them to go to FELIX CHURCH or CHAPEL as it was shown on the map. Here's a discussion from my notes [incorporating my Uncle Dick's [RWE] research notes. Together we walked these hills and photographed where my greatgreatgrandmother, Catherine SERROT PYLE lived with her second husband, Thomas ENSOR.

Census, 1870, KY, Bracken Co, Augusta Precinct, Dwg/Fam 312, Thomas ENZER family: (Note: Enez, Quilla, Alferd, Catherine and Nancy are step-children of Thomas ENSER (ENSOR); their surname is actually PYLE, not ENSER.)

ENSER, Thomas, age 38 (born 1832), Male, White, occupation Farmer, born Tenn. ENSER, Catherine, age 44 (born 1826) Female, White, occupation Keeps House, born Tenn (OH?). (PYLE) Enez (Etienne?), age 25 (born 1845), Female, White, born Ohio. (child 1 of 6.) (PYLE), Quilla (Aquilla), age 21 (born 1849), Male, White, born Ohio. (child 2 of 6.) (PYLE), Alferd (Alfred), age 19 (born 1851), Male, White, born Ohio. (child 3 of 6.) (PYLE), Catherine, age 11 (born 1859), Female, White, born Ohio (KY?). (child 4 of 6.) (PYLE), Nancy, age 9 (born 1861), Female, White, born Ohio (KY?). (child 5 of 6.) ENSER, Melvina, age 2 (born 1868), Female, White, born Ohio (KY?). (child 6 of 6.)

[RWE: Smith and Catherine (SERROT) PYLE moved from Cincinnati, OH, to Augusta, KY, abt 1855; Catherine and Nancy "Nannie" PYLE were probably born in KY.]

Census, 1880, KY, Bracken Co, Augusta Precinct, p. 33, Dwg/Fam 404, Thomas ENSOR family:

ENZER, Thomas, age 46 (born 1834), Male, Head, occupation Farmer, born TN, father born TN, mother born TN.
ENZER, Catherine, age 53 (born 1827), Female, Wife, occupation Keeping House, born PA, father born France, mother born France.
ENZER, Melvina, age 10 (born 1870), Female, Dau. (child 1 of 2.)
ENZER, Martha J. age 8 (born 1872), Female, Dau. (child 2 of 2.)

(RWE: Catherine died after the 1880 census of Bracken Co, KY, when she was 53; no record of her death or burial has been located.)

Real Estate: A triangular piece of land, about 1/4 acre, on the north side of Big Bracken Creek with the north side bounded by the Turnpike Road, the east side adjoining Frederick APPLEMAN's land, and the south side adjoining the lands of George HECK later sold to Thomas MAHAN. 13 Nov 1869 Bracken Co, KY, Deed: "Abraham BAKER and June BAKER of the city of Augusta....for $75.00 paid by Fredrick APPLEMAN....do convey unto Catherine ENSOR of the same County and State...a Small tract of land....on the waters of Big Bracken Creek....(south side at the corner of Cornelious MAHAN along George HICKS' line)....where the said ENSOR now lives...at the direction of Said Appleman."

On 23 Nov 1872, the land was sold to William R CASE and Catharine CASE, his wife. Catharine PYLE CASE was the daughter of Smith and Catherine (SERROT) PYLE. On 01 Nov 1873, Thomas and Catharine (PYLE) CASE sold the land to Thomas ENSOR for $75. Thomas ENSOR was Catharine's step-father. (Deed Book 11, pp. 275 & 276) On 29 Nov 1873 Thomas and Catherine ENSOR sold the property to Henrietta MAHAN, wife of Thomas MAHAN, Jr. (Deed Book 11, p. 285).

(RWE: In 1998, accompanied by my wife, my niece Nikki Nickell, my niece Jean Carroll and her husband Alan, we located this property along Big Bracken Creek a few miles southeast of Augusta on Route KY-435. Only a few ruins of a frame structure remain in the area indicated on a 19th Century Atlas as the Ensor residence. From this location the road climbs up from the valley where the creek runs to flat country where the Felix Baptist Church stood until it was destroyed by a tornado several decades ago. My grandparents, Edward M. Edmonson and Nancy "Nannie" Pyle, were married at Catherine's home by Rev. Felix.)

Bracken County Tornadoes

I do not recall the exact date but I think it was in 1968 that a tornado completely destroyed the Felix Baptist Church. According to a gentleman who lived up on that hill, the church and a small cemetery were on his family's farm.
