Jacob Gabbard (Gabbert) entered Revolutionary War service in J un e, 17 81 in Burke Co, NC for an eighteen months tour of duty. He se rv ed as a li ght horseman in a company commanded by Captain Mordecai Cl ar k. They march ed south to join General Greene's forces in SC; but Gab ba rd became ill a nd could not go on. He was later recruited in a com pa ny of mounted troo ps commanded by Captain John Bickerstaff of Burke Co unt y. They were engag ed mainly in fighting Tories in Burke and Linco ln Coun ties. They captur ed several Tories and forced them to serve in c ontinent al service. He th en joined a regiment commanded by Colonel Benj amin Clev eland and served ag ainst the Tories in Wilkes and Surry Countie s. He al so served under Capta in Galbraith Falls. They marched towar ds SC to jo in General Greene. Betw een Salisbury and Camden there w as a skirmish wi th the British and the Tor ies. He was impaled through t he thigh by a pi ne rail fence during a charg e. Because of this injur y, he was confined s ix to seven months in the hosp ital at Camden, S C. It was here that he wi tnessed the death of Adam Grind staff, a fell ow soldier and probable kinsm an. He served under Captain Bre vard at Cam den as a guard. After he retu rned to Burkes Co, he was draft ed and serv ed in Captain John Connelly's C ompany guarding the Burke Fronti er. He w as discharged in 1782.

Summary of Later Life

Following the Revolutionary War, Gabbard moved from Burke County to Ab in gt on, VA to Lincoln Co, KY and to Clay Co, KY Still later he mov ed to Ro ckc astle Co, KY and Laurel Co, KY. He stated in his pension dec larati on th at he was acquainted with General Greene, General Sumter, Gen eral L ee a nd General Pickens.

He applied for Revolutionary War pension in Clay Co, KYin 18 34 at a ge 7 4. He was awarded $20.00 per annum.

Jacob married Margaret 'Peggy' Smith, daughter of Edward Smith and Catherine Stonecypher, about 1786. Margaret was born in 1772 in Carter Co, TN and died about 1830 in Laurel Co, KY about age 58.

Edward married Sarah 'Sally' Bowman, daughter of Elijah Bowman and Elizabeth Gentry, on 8 Mar 1818 in Clay Co, KY. Sarah was born in 1800 in Madison Co, KY and died in 1880 at age 80.

   41 M    vii. Phillip Gabbard was born about 1805.

   42 M    viii. Rueben Gabbard was born about 1807.

   43 F    ix. Elizabeth 'Eliza' Gabbard was born about 1812.

Henry married Barbara Hunsucker,1 daughter of Abraham Hunsucker and Elizabeth, in 1792 in Washington Co, VA.1 Barbara was born in 1770 in Augusta Co, VA,1 died in 1848 in Owsley Co, KY1 at age 78, and was buried in Henry Gabbard Cemetery, Indian Creek (next to Esau Church), Owsley Co, KY.1
