He serv ed the la st 31 years on the Milk Promotion Services of Indian a. He w as a current su pervisor of the Soil & Water District. He was prec ed ed in death by his par ents, John B. and Sarah (Hadix) Watts; and two b rot hers, Gordon and Charl es Watts. He w as bo rn in B ig Stone Gap and moved to Tampa in 1988. He was a Certifi ed Publ ic Accoun tant. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran. Surviving are h is wife S haron Garr ison; son Bill Garrison and wife Chrissy, daughter La urel Bus er and husba nd Gary, all of Tampa, Fla.; his mother Vergie Garri son, brot her-in-law Jo hn Terry and wife Debra, sister Lila Reach and hus band Bil l, all of Homosa ssa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brian and Karian ne Buser; s everal nieces a nd nephews. He was a memb er of F irst Presbyterian Church of Big Stone Gap. Mr. Showalter was prece ded in d eath by his parents, George Edward Showalt er and Ida Witt Showal ter; brot hers, Ralph Showalter, Floyd Showalter a nd Edwin Showalter; sis ters, Marg aret Gleason and Mary McCrary. Survivors include his wife, Joy ce Showalt er of the home; daughters, Mary H elen and son-in-law Kevin Law son, Big St one Gap, Lisa and son-in-law Micha el Giles, Wood Haven, Mich .; grandchild ren, Mark and wife Amy Akers, Jenni fer Akers, Tyler Giles a nd Brent Gile s; great-grandchildren, Brittany Chri stian, Austin Akers, K aitlyn Aker s, Jonathan Akers, Lauren Barnette; a nd a host of special nie ces, nephe ws and friends. A resident of Fayetteville, Ar. since early 1930's (after the d ea th of h is father, Bill). 'Boots', as he is known by family, lives o ff Hu ntsvil le Road, near the city. A self-employed laborer, he is now r etire d. In h is spare time, he likes to sing, play the guitar. He play ed f or us at h is 78th birthday party at Walker Park last April, '97. Unt il re centl y, he always grew a little garden each Spring, sometim es at my mothe r's pl ace, sometimes at Pauline or Clarence's. He has alw ays liked to fi sh...st arting as a child with his dad ... I rememb er in my youth wh en he and my d ad would set trot lines and catch some re ally big catfis h! He is well res pected by those he has worked for, a nd is known to th em as John. (He h as a most winning smile, speci al to me perhaps because w hen he smiles, h is eyes remind me so mu ch of my own mother's, both in co lor...blue/green. ..and in their sparkl ing softness.) Spring 1998: Whi le on a trip to St. Paul, and a side-tr ip to Cass, Boo ts recalled old tim es, such as the names of their favori te fishing hol es - Tucker Hole and H igh Bank (where he and his dad lik ed to fish) - a nd reminisced about the ir annual trip to Mulberry, whe re they would pick c otton, corn, sweet pot atoes & pecans. They got 15 c ents a quart to pick t he pecans. He remembe rs that they took their dog s, and went over the Ca ss mountains. At nig ht they camped out, sleepi ng on quilts. He said th ey tied the mules clo se at night, probably beca use they could hear the wol ves howling in the d eep woods around the m. At Mulberry the family stay ed at Station Hill unt il the weather beg an to turn cool, in September. Pe ople were allow ed to go into the pick ed over fields and gather what was le ft to take hom e, and he said his fa mily was always willing. It helped g et them throu gh the winters. Li ke my mother, he, too, remembers the sloug hs and big sn akes at Mulberr y. He also recalled that they passed the 'Cas sabaum' hou se on the tra il from St. Paul through Wolf Pen Hollow to the ir home up Ba ll Creek, th at the store in Combs was run by Blevins & two ot hers, and th at Fenn( ?) Brashears was a cross-tie inspector at Combs. He r emembered t hat the re had been cabins built (by CCC)at Cherry Bend on Hwy 2 3, a nd on our w ay back from Cass we stopped. Sure enough, there were the f oun dations st ill outlining where they had stood. Boots disappeared in to t he woo ds in one direction while Pauline, John Samples and I explor ed in an othe r. When he returned, with a contented smile, he said he wou ld li ke to p itch a tent and just stay there for a couple of weeks!

My mother! Daughter of Bill and Nora Thornsberry. When I was a ch il d, I d idn't know that my mother was a beautiful woman...she was ju st my M om. Ma ny years after I married (and when I was much older than s he w as in the 19 50 picture which I include in my book, 'Descendants of E dmo nd and Eliza Cl arkston Witt'), I was looking through the family photo s, a nd suddenly I co uld see... I was looking at the face of a beautif ul woma n! She had natural ly wavy hair that had changed in color as she g rew, fr om a 'tow-head' (s he called it cotton-white) as a tot, a honey bl on de in her teens, to a wa rm light brown in later years. Her eyes were. ... Thornsberry blue...when t hey weren't green! They appeared to chan ge acc ording to what color she w as wearing. They were beautiful. Ali ce had liv ed in Fayetteville since the early 1930's. She was mar ri ed to Lenard Stan berry, son of J.R. and Edith Eacret Stanberry, in 194 1, a nd they made the ir home on Hunt Lane in Fayetteville until the la te 1980' s, when they ent ered a local nursing home. Lenard died Sept. 1 5, 1991. Ali ce lived at t he City Hospital Geriatric Nursing Home on Sou th School in Fa yettevill e, and, finally, at Meadow View Lodge in Huntsvi lle, Ark. Alice was a pro ud cook,(claimed she learned at her mother's sid e; was alwa ys 'hanging ar ound', watching and learning as Nora cook the f amily meals ), and she lik ed to prepare big meals for family gatherin gs of her brother s, sisters, n ephews and nieces - nearly always around t wenty people someho w manag ed to squeez into her tiny home! She loved th at home and preferred b ei ng there above all places - looking out at h er beloved hills and watc hi ng the birds that seemed to flock to her ya rd in greatest numbers and v ari ety. It was her sanctuary as she came o ut of the depression years a nd the trau ma of being left an orphan at a ge fourteen. Her happiest da ys were spe nt there in the company of her h usband, and her grand-childre n. They pla yed games, (like High-Nine a nd Wa-Hoo), fished, hunted, cooke d, made garde ns, and tended the 'old ho meplace' together, and above al l, laughed a lot. She was in poor health f or many years, suffering from se vere rheumatoid ar thritis and, later, co ngestive heart failure (like h er father before he r) and other complicati ons from cardio-vascular diseas e. Her death certificate, signed by Dr. I van Box of Huntsville, showed ca use of dea th as 'generalized arterioscle rosis'. Always an individual wi th strong opinions and a unique conce pt of propriet y, she left highly spe cific instructions for disposal of h er remains, a nd for the manner in whi ch she wished to be remembere d; in accordance wi th her final wishes, h er body was cremated under t he direction of Nelson 's Funeral Home, Fayett eville, Ark. and interred b eside her husband on June 30, 1994,(the ir 53 rd wedding anniversary date .)
