General Notes: As per The Spicer Family of Breathitt County, Kentucky by Janie Griffith, she states:
While Buddy Spicer's family occupied the old farm, the family dwelling house was the location of an early phone company - one of the first in Eastern Kentucky. From 1906 until the flood of 1957, Uncle Buddy Spicer owned and operated this company, which consisted of over one-hundred miles of phone line. Known as the Rockhouse Telephone Company, it once served more than eighty families.
The central office of this phone company was located in the front room of the old Spicer house. The four lines it served were battery operated. These four lines went from Canoe to Hyden, Booneville, Jackson and Athol.
The monthly rates were set at $1.50 in 1906 and did not change throughout the years the phone system was in operation. Uncle Buddy loved talking and being with people; so to collect these bills, at the first of every month, he would ride out over the countryside and visit with each individual customer.
After Uncle Buddy died in 1945, his daughter, Julia Spicer Turner took over the duties of operator. She would answer the telephone, make all the connections and collect all the bills. She continued with this family business until 1957, when the flood of 1957 destroyed all the main lines of the phone company.
