WILLIAM CORNETT (Coon Creek, Leslie Co, Kentucky, January 17, 189 8. ); I w as born in Perry Co, Kentucky, February 3, 1814, on Leatherwo od Cr ee k. My father's name was Arcibald Cornett. He was born in East T enne ss ee on either Little or Big Moccasin. His father's name was Jam es Cor ne tt who came to Perry Co, Kentucky, when my father was a b oy 7 to 10 y ea rs old. My father was 84 years old when he died in 187 3. This wou ld ma ke the coming of the Cornetts to Kentucky from 17 96 to 1799. My gra ndfath er was married twice, once to a Gilliam, on ce an Everedge. He h ad childr en as follows: Nathaniel, Samuel, Roge r, Archibald, William, Jo hn, Rober t, Lucy (Woolery Eversole), Elizabe th (Campbell), and Nancy (Sam uel Combs ). I have been married three time s; first, Nancy Mainyard; seco nd, Rebec ca Morgan; third, Malinda Garriso n. Most of these families we re larage. T here were eight in my father 's family and they all liv ed to have grandchil dren. I was the oldest a nd only one living.
Bear Hunting. I believe I have killed 30 bears in my life a nd fr om 5 00 to 1,000 deer. I killed 21 in one season at a lick and nev er mi ss ed a shot. My father-in-law said he killed 705 in five yer s. He ke pt a t ally on his gun stock. He sold the hams and the hides a nd sa id he made mo re money than at anything else he ever did. Wild turk eys we re abundan t. There are a good many in this country yet.
School Teachers. Old Frederic, Lewis was the first teach er I ev er we nt to school to. Brashears - Old David Fee is the best tea cher I e ver we nt to. Brashears was next.
Preachers. Old Robert Hicks was the first preacher I remem be r. He w as a Baptist. My father and mother were members of the Bapti st c hurc h. My grandfather, Lewis (Gillam?) [sic], was not a member of t he chu rch b ut his wife was.
Mills. We had hand mills when I was a boy, also pound mil ls r un by a s weep and later pound mills run by water power. Stores a re to ld of mice, r ats, and many things getting pounded up with the mea l. O ne story is to ld of a cow who learned to take out a mouthful whi le the pr etle was lifte d. We used graters when corn was soft.
Revolutionary Soldiers. My great-grandfather was a Revolutiona ry so ld ier. I do not know whether he was a private or an officer or wh at regi me nt he was in.
War of 1812. My grandfather was in the War of 1812. He w as in t he Ho rse Shoe Battle and in the Battle of New Orleans. Robert Co rnett ma rri ed Charlotte Callahan. Roger married Zilpah Callahan. Robe rt liv ed in Be nge. His son, Isaac, moved to Madison county.
