Old Time Disease Terms

      • Ablepsia - blindness
      • Aphonia - laryngitis
      • Apoplexy - stroke
      • Ague - recurring fever & chills due to a malarial infection
      • Biliousness - jaundice associated with liver disease
      • Black Pox - small pox
      • Bloody Flux - dysentery
      • Brain Fever - sun/heat stroke
      • Bright's Disease - kidney diseases/disorders
      • Bronze John - yellow fever
      • Camp Fever - typhus
      • Canine Madness - hydrophobia
      • Carditis - inflammation of the heart wall
      • Catarrh - inflammation of mucous membrane and/or Cerebral Hemorrhage (Apoplexy)
      • Cerebritis - inflammation of the brain
      • Childbed Fever - infection following childbirth
      • Chlorosis - lack of iron / anemia
      • Chorea  - nervous disorder. Often manifests twitching spasms. Also known as St. Vitus' Dance.
      • Commotion - Concussion
      • Consumption - tuberculosis
      • Cramp Colic - appendicitis
      • Croup - spasmodic laryngitis of infants and young children. Difficulty breathing and hoarse metallic cough
      • Dropsy - edema (swelling), caused by kidney or heart disease. Also called congestive heart failure.
      • Dysentery - diarrhea caused by spoiled milk, most often in babies or young children. 
      • Dyspepsia - acid indigestion
      • Enteric Fever - typhoid fever
      • Enteritis - inflammation of the intestines
      • Falling Sickness - epilepsy
      • Fits - convulsions
      • French Pox / French Disease - venereal disease/Syphilis
      • Galloping Consumption - pulmonary tuberculosis
      • Gout - an inflammation of the joints. Poor circulation caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body,
      • Green Sickness - anemia
      • Grippe - influenza (flu)
      • Jail Fever - typhus
      • Lumbago - Pain in lower back, hip, or thigh: Sciatica
      • Lung Fever - pneumonia
      • Lung Sickness - tuberculosis
      • Mania - insanity
      • Milk Leg - a painful swelling of the legs. Usually caused by infection after labor.
      • Mormal - gangrene
      • Mortification - infection
      • Neurasthenia - neurotic condition
      • Phthisis - pulmonary consumption
      • Puerperal Fever - infection following childbirth
      • Putrid Fever - diphtheria
      • Quinsy/Quincy - tonsillitis
      • Scrofula - tubercular infection of the throat / swelling of the neck glands
      • Septicemia - blood poisoning
      • Ship's Fever - typhus
      • Yellow Jacket - yellow fever
