African American Civil War Soldiers Casey County Kentucky

Compiled and Submitted by Prof. Aubrey Pennington

Many owners used the slave as their substitute for the first military draft in American history which began with the Civil War. Entries that simply identified the slaves owner meant the owner literally sold the slave to the federal government for the 'bonus' money offered to entice black as well as white men to join the army. Generally speaking the bonus would have been $300-$400 dollars.

The slave, just like his white counter part was committed to the military for a period of three years from signing/muster-in until the end of their term at 'muster-out'. So in a sense, those slaves sold by their master's for the bonus money simply exchanged one form of slavery for another; however, they would have been considered 'free' provided they survived the experience. Many did survive, however, some did not. I will work on a list with 'remarks' that identify those who mustered-out (survived) the war and those who either died from disease (the biggest killer of black and white soldiers on both sides) and those who were either killed in combat or died as a result of their combat wounds.
