The Thursday, December 4, 1941
edition of the Russell County News reported that;
Gene Williams, son of Ivan
Williams, of Decatur, this [Russell] County, was shot and killed
instantly by Blevins Lay at Dunnville, Casey County, last Monday night."
The KY death record index gives the victim's name as Evan E. Williams,
age 25.
Subsequently, the Thursday, August 20, 1942
edition of the Russell County News carried this follow up, reprinted
from the Casey County News:
"Blevins Lay Dies of Heart Attack"
A message was received by relatives here Sunday telling of the sudden
death of Mr. Blevins Lay, about 70 years of age, which occurred in
Newport where he had been spending some time with a daughter. Deceased
formerly lived in this county. Surviving are several children, also a
half-brother, Mr. T.M. Lay, of Dunnville. This paper could not learn of
funeral and burial arrangements at the time of going to press. Lay was
at liberty awaiting trial on a charge of murdering Eugene Williams [of
Russell County] which occurred last November. His trial was to have come
up at the September term of circuit court." ( "Sunday" probably referred
to Sunday, August 9th.
An entry noting Mr. Lay death was not found either in the Kentucky or
Ohio death record index.)
