CASEY COUNTY, KENTUCKY NEWSLETTER

Vol. 1, June, 2007

I was in Casey County from May 17- June 2. While there I managed to take more than 16,000 tombstone photos. For a list of those cemeteries photographed to date please consult the last page. These photos need to be cropped, transcribed and uploaded to the FindAGrave.com website. As you can imagine, this will take a great deal of time. I will send updates on those that are finished.

SONNY COLEMAN spent 1600 hours cutting and scanning more than 9100 obituaries from the “Casey County News” for the years 1972-2006. He is currently anticipating beginning work on 1911 to 1972. Sonny is also donating his photos of Middleburg Cemetery to our project.

Sonny has scanned these obits and they are available on 3 CD’s from him for $50.00 which includes the shipping. If interested please contact him at sonnycoleman@windstream.net

Congrats to BRENDA SANDERS. She organized her church to clean up the Vandever Cemetery near Liberty Lake. An article appeared in “The Casey County News” on May 23. She will try to organize Scouts and other church groups to “adopt” a cemetery for cleaning. While there, Brenda and I tried to locate the Rice Cemetery in Dunnville. We finally found where it was supposed to be but it was so overgrown with vines and poison ivy that not a single stone was visible. This cemetery will be a fall project for clean-up. Another cemetery that has grown over is the Matherly. Only the sign and the tops of two stones are visible.

Brenda and I took a tour of some of the lesser known cemeteries and she compiled driving directions to their locations. I still need to get these typed up.

One more note on Brenda. She has donated four disks to the Casey County Library that contain genealogical information that she has compiled on scores of Casey County families.

RHODA PATTON WATHEN very generously gave her permission to publish three cemeteries that she photographed on the Find A Grave website. (Cold Springs, Antioch Baptist and Shady Grove).

RICHARD HOLLIS gave his permission to post his photos of South Fork Cemetery and has contributed a lot of info to the Ancestry Casey County, KY One World family tree.

In addition, he was in Casey Co. the week following me and took more than 2000 photos for Findagrave in the following cemeteries:

MARY FRANCES WADE transcribed several cemeteries and contributed many, many obituaries. One of the cemeteries she transcribed was Wilkerson. This is actually in Russell County but is less than ¼ mile from the Casey County boundary. I photographed this and will be posting it as well to Find A Grave as many former Casey County residents are buried there.

Thanks to JMYOhio who helped me with relationships and women’s maiden names in the Lanhamtown Cemetery. You might want to take a look because they posted photographs of the people as well.

TIM MATTINGLY gave his permission to post his photos taken on the Bob Evan’s farm.

If you live in or near Casey County and would like to volunteer to help clean a cemetery or photograph one, please contact me.

If you have knowledge of additions or corrections that need to be made to the postings. Let me know i.e. women’s maiden names.

If you do not live in Casey County but would like to volunteer in another way, there are many jobs available.
