1. Nicholas GENTRY I.
This families documentation comes from the Gentry Family in America 1676 to 1909 by Richard Gentry, Ph. B., M. S. Kansas City, Missouri Printed for the Author by The Grafton Press New York, MCMIX,
page 31, 32
The first record of Nicholas Gentry that has been found, is in the old Land Books of the Colony of Virginia in the record of patent to land in favor of Samuel Gentry, Dated Oct 21, 1684, and described as being situated in New Kent County, adjacent to Lands of Nicholas Gentry and others. The second mention of his name is found in St. Peter's Parish Register of New Kent County, Va., in the record of the baptism of his daughter Elizabeth, Dated Aug., 1687.
The St. Peter's Parish Vestry Book also has a record dated May 4, 1689, of the appointment of Nicholas Gentry and others as processioners of land in said parish. On Oct. 22, 1701, Nicholas Gentry allowed by the Vestry of St. Peter's Paris for clothes and funeral charges of Mabel Wood, 971 lbs of tobacco; and in 1703, he is mentioned among the tithables of the north side of Totopotomy's creek.
In St. Paul's Parish Vestry Book is recorded the appointment of Nicholas Gentry as road overseer, Jan 8, 1709, and on March 14 on the same year mention is made that the lands of Nicholas Gentry, Joseph Gentry and others are adjacent to each other. He is mentioned again 1711, 1723, 1734, 1735 and in 1739. This last mention may possibly be that of his son Nicholas.
Hanover County was cut off of the western part of New Kent County in 1720, and St. Paul's parish was in that part of New Kent County in 1720, and St. Paul's Parish was in that part of New Kent which was afterwards made Hanover County.
It is a tradition in the family that Nicholas Gentry and his brother Samuel Gentry were British soldiers, who came to America at the time of the Bacon Rebellion. British soldiers landed in Jamestown, Va, in January 1677 and were paid off and discharged in the fall of 1683; and the further fact that Nicholas Gentry and Samuel Gentry were land-owners of record in 1684, tends to corroborate the family tradition.
Nicholas may have had other children besides the three mentioned. Joseph Gentry mentioned in 1709 as having adjoining land to Nicholas Gentry, may have been one of his sone. Below is the form of record in St. Peter's Parish Register.

From his will it appears that he had two wives, and two sets of children, and that his last wife was named Jane. He owned land in Lousia Co., which was a part of Hanover before Louisa was organized in 1742.

Family: Like David, Moses' chronology can be argued on the basis the date of his marriage to Lucy Sims, probably in 1758, when his father Nicholas gave him 100 acres of the family plantation(10c). Moses did not move to Albemarle County until 1778(22), at the same time as his father, and his brothers David and Martin. GFA describes Moses: "Moses Gentry bought land ... on the old Lynchburg road, north of Garland's Store, on the south side of Ragged Mountain, and made it his permanent home. He was a Ruling Elder in the Cove Presbyterian Church (situated about 6 miles from his home). His wife, Lucy Sims, was noted for her religious zeal and church work. She lived to be nearly 100 years old, surviving her husband by many years. After his death, she kept an inn, or tavern, her home being suitably located on the main road from Lynchburg to Richmond. Moses Gentry's will was probated in 1808, and final settlement was not made by the administrator, Edward Garland, until 1825." Like his brother Benajah, Moses' name appears frequently in Albemarle County court documents, road orders, and the like, and was accompanied in later years by the names of some of his children. These children included James, Frances, Moses Jr., Jane, Claybourn, John, Benajah, Nicholas, David, Elizabeth, Joanna, and Polly. Many of his family moved to Kentucky to join other Gentrys. James, Claybourn, John and Benajah went to Madison County, while Moses Jr. went to Green County. Nicholas and David both died at a relatively young age in Albemarle County.
BIRTH: Gentry's of America by Richard Gentry, page 36 born abt 1722 in Hanover, Virginia. Louisa was organized from Hanover County, Virginia in 1742, and at that time a number of Gentry's had settled in Hanover, Virginia. In 1744 the county of Albemarle was organized still further west of Louisa, but it was not until about 1760 when the Gentry's began to settle in Albemarle. Moses bought land of Samuel Gay, of Albemarle, March 13, 1778 on the old Lynchburg road north of Garland's Store, on the south side of Ragged Mountain, and maid it his permanent home. He was a Ruling Elder in the Cove Presbyterian Church, a large brick church building situated about six miles from his home. His wife Lucy Sims, was noted for her religious zeal and church work. She lived to be nearly one hundred years of age. surviving her husband many years. After his death, which occurred in 1808, she kept an inn, or tavern, her home being suitably located on the main road from Lynchburg to Richmond.

Bartlett and David so resembled each other that but a few neighbors could distinguish one from the other. David was a private soldier in the Revolutionary War, and it is related of them that very often Bartlett would come to visit him in camp and they would quickly exchange clothing and David would go back home to make a visit, Bartlett would take his place and no one in his company or mess being the wiser. Later, they married sisters.
The Haggard Family in England and America 1433 to 1899 by David D. Haggard, page 49, 50
He enlisted at the age of 16 years in the Revolutionary army and was in service and on duty at Yorktown at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to General Washington.
In his early life he followed the carpenter trade, and as he lived near President Thomas Jefferson, he was often employed to make additions or changes to his mansion at Monticello. Mr. Jefferson having been sent on a mission to France by this government, he fell in with some of their styles of architecture. On his return home he determined to make some racial changes in his mansion to conform to the French style. One of the changes consisted in putting in new front windows extending down to the floor, which he filled with large pains of French plate glass that he brought from Paris. Mr. Jefferson was very fond of the chase and for that purpose kept a find pack of hounds. While Mr. Haggard was working upon the house an incident occurred that calls to mind the fact that Mr. Jefferson had a brother living with him who was simple, or weak minded, which fact I believe is not generally known or is it anywhere recorded in history. This simple brother remonstrated against the long widows and finally said: "Why Tom, the dogs will run right through them."
Not long afterwards Mr. Jefferson's overseer came in from another farm followed by his dog, who took up his position on the veranda while his master sat in the front room talking with Mr. Jefferson. Pretty soon the hounds got scent of the strange dog and gave chase. In order to keep out of their way he ran around the house with the whole pack after him, and when several circuits had been made he espied his master sitting in the room and mad a lung through the glass with the hounds following close at his heels.
