The traditions of our father James Haggard (the son of a wealthy aristocratic Lord of England(, who had been educated for the ministry, left England about 1698 and came to americ as a passenger on a merchant ship bouund fo Norfolk, Va.
When he landed he was yet under 21 years of age, but having a find education his first employment was teaching school. There was connected with this school a young woman whose charms so impress him that thye were afterwards marrids. As the result of this union several sons were bon to them.
The avoe we give it has benn handed down to us, but, be that as it may, we found that in the early part of the 18th centruy there were four or more mamilies of Haggards in the eastern part of Virginia, and they claim, and are generally understood, to have been sons of the school teacher above mentioned. Their names were:

Bartlett and David so resembled each other that but a few neighbors could distinguish one from the other. David was a private soldier in the Revolutionary War, and it is related of them that very often Bartlett would come to visit him in camp and they would quickly exchange clothing and David would go back home to make a visit, Bartlett would take his place and no one in his company or mess being the wiser. Later, they married sisters.
The Haggard Family in England and America 1433 to 1899 by David D. Haggard, page 49, 50
He enlisted at the age of 16 years in the Revolutionary army and was in service and on duty at Yorktown at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to General Washington.
In his early life he followed the carpenter trade, and as he lived near President Thomas Jefferson, he was often employed to make additions or changes to his mansion at Monticello. Mr. Jefferson having been sent on a mission to France by this government, he fell in with some of their styles of architecture. On his return home he determined to make some racial changes in his mansion to conform to the French style. One of the changes consisted in putting in new front windows extending down to the floor, which he filled with large pains of French plate glass that he brought from Paris. Mr. Jefferson was very fond of the chase and for that purpose kept a find pack of hounds. While Mr. Haggard was working upon the house an incident occurred that calls to mind the fact that Mr. Jefferson had a brother living with him who was simple, or weak minded, which fact I believe is not generally known or is it anywhere recorded in history. This simple brother remonstrated against the long widows and finally said: "Why Tom, the dogs will run right through them."
Not long afterwards Mr. Jefferson's overseer came in from another farm followed by his dog, who took up his position on the veranda while his master sat in the front room talking with Mr. Jefferson. Pretty soon the hounds got scent of the strange dog and gave chase. In order to keep out of their way he ran around the house with the whole pack after him, and when several circuits had been made he espied his master sitting in the room and mad a lung through the glass with the hounds following close at his heels.

He was an unusually active and energetic man and of high moral standing. He was constituent member and active agent in organizing the first Baptist church of Bloomington, Ill.
Although a solider of the Revolution and entitled to pension, he never applied for it. He is the only solider of American Revolution to be buried in Bloomington cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY: History of the Haggard Family in England and America 1433 to 1899 by David D. Haggard, page 82, 85
He worked on a farm until about 15 years old, when he came to Bloomington and learned the carpenter trade with Samuel B. Haggard. His education was only such as could be had in the country schools of that day. His career in public office began by his serving his ward in the town council of Bloomington during the years of 1854-55. In April 1858, he was elected township collector, which office he held two terms. In 1860 he was elected sheriff of McLean county, which office he resigned in the summer of 1862 to enter the army. He was elected captain of Company E, 94th Illinois infantry. After serving as captain eight months he was detailed as quartermaster in General Herron's command, which at that time was the army of Missouri and Arkansas, with headquarters at Rolla, Missouri, He at once began to get the supplies and store ready to cross the country to Little Rock, Arkansas, and assist in the siege of Vicksburg.
His services were so appreciated that Judge David Davis and Hon. Isaac Funk and others urged President Lincoln to commission him regular quartermaster, which was done. He held this position until the close of the ware in 1865/ Soon after his return home he was elected treasurer of McLean county and held this position for two terms. Soon thereafter he was appointed chief clerk to Gen Giles A. Smith, Second Assistant Postmaster General, but in a short time, without his knowledge, he was appointed United States Marshall for the southern district of Illinois, which position he held nearly two years, when he received a telegram informing him that he had been appointed second Assistant Postmaster General to succeed General Smith, who had resigned on account of ill health. This office he held about three years when President Grant appointed him Governor of Colorado territory, where he remained until it was admitted as a state, when the people elected him governor. He was again elected Governor of the state in 1890 and at the close of the term was urged to accept the nomination for another term, but declined.
It is noteworthy fact that all of the foregoing important position held by him from 1854 to 1894 were filled with great ability and unchallenged integrity.
Martha also married (2) Henry NEWTON on 1834.

Marriage: Marriage to Indiana Boone Dec. 23st 1847 I do hereby sertify that I give my son Nathaniel Blyth privalege to obtain lisens from the clerk of Adams County and State of Ohio to marry. Stephen D. Blyth
Nathaniel married (1) Indiana BOONE, daughter of John BOONE and Margaret (Peggy) COOPER , on 25 Dec 1847 in Sprigg twp, Adams Co., Ohio. Indiana was born 1 Sep 1826 in Adams Co, OH. She died 9 Sep 1868 in Adams Co, OH and was buried in Boone Family Cemetery, Rogers Ridge Rd, Adams Co, Ohio.
DEATH: From Pauli Driver--Indiana (India) (Ann) died in Huntington TWP, Brown, OH, USA on 9 Sep 1868, she was 42. Buried in Adams, OH, USA. Record of Deaths, Probate Court, Brown County, Ohio, 1868/69.
Education: From Pauli Driver
Could Read & Write At Least A Little.
Deed: Death certificate and Marriage certificate located in Nathaniel's pension records.
Notes: From Pauli Drive--Indiana had a first cousin, a few years older, who was also named Indiana Boone. This cousin's father was Daniel Boone (not the pioneer), a brother of Indiana's father, John Boone.
Deed Abstract Adams Co, Ohio dated 1828. Land purchased by John Boone from John Rankin listing her as one of John Boone's children. Another Land transaction dated 11 Oct 1847 where she and her sister Sarah are selling their land inherited from their father, John Boone to their brother Jacob Boone.
Unable to find her grave, but suspect it is one of the unmarked graves in the Boone Family Cemetery on Ginger Ridge Road, Adams Co, Ohio. Most of her brothers and sisters are buried there, as well as her mother and Uncle Zenas Cooper.
My Maternal Grandmother, Ida Mae Ailshire, dau of Mary Ellen Blythe Ailshire, said that she had 11 children. and that she died in childbirth. Grandma also told me that the baby was given to another family to raise and the boy died about 9 months after his birth.
Blythe to Boone: On the 25th day of December 1847, I solomized the marriage of Nathaniel Blythe with Indiana Boone. David Beam J. P.
Birth date figured from "Record of Deaths, Probate Court, Brown Co., Ohio. Even though the year was wrong (it said her estate was probated on May 18, 1869 and that she died on 9 Sep 1869! Probably sloppy on the part of the clerk), it did say that when she died that her age at death was 42 years and 9 days.

Removed with the family to the vicinity of Bloomington, Illinois, in 1841 and spent the next five years on the farm. In the spring of 1846 the family moved into the village and he learned the trade of cabinet maker, which occupation he followed for ten years.
His education was only such as could be obtained in the country school that day. Since quitting the trade he has been engaged in various occupations. About twelve years he spent in the nursery business and about the same length of time was spent as a traveling salesman in different lines of business. Being an expert geographer he spent several years in map surveying in Illinois and Indiana. Edited and published the Bloomigton Lancet for six years, and is still contributor to its columns.
In 1888 he wrote and published a history of Prohibition party, a work recognized as standard authority throughout the country. His grandfathers were James Haggard and Mimrod McIntosh, the latter a solider of the Revolution and a farmer. Our subject was reared on a farm, and was about eight years old at the time of his mothers death. His father afterward married Mrs. Elizabeth Holman, and had two children by this marriage; his second wife had one child by her former husband. The subject of this sketch lived with his grandparents for four years after his mothers death but returned to his fathers house on his second marriage, and there lived until he became of age, when he started in life for himself at farming. He moved with his parents to Todd County, Kentucky about 1842 and lived there till 1860, when with D. Perkins to Ballard County: worked three years, returned to Todd and farmed till 1870, and then came back to Ballard County. In 1873, he purchased the land on which he now resides. It first consisted of thirteen acres to which he has added thirty seven more. He also owns another farm of 175 acres all in good condition. He has made what he has by his own industry and economy, having only received about $30 only from his mother's estate when he became of age. He married February 11, 1866 to Miss Oliva T. Miller of Ballard County, a daughter of William A. and Eliza A. Shrader Miller, natives of Spencer County, Kentucky of Irish Descent. To this union have been born three children: Georg W, Charles E.
