WILLIAM AND MARY (ADAMS) HOGAN
Submitted by Marigold Hogan
WILLIAM SCOTT HOGAN was born March 1816 in Kentucky.
Date of birth from census records. He states that his mother and father were also born in Kentucky, however Kentucky was a part of Virginia. I called the Cemetery and they have no information.
WE DO NOT HAVE A BIRTH RECORD AS THERE WERE NO RECORDINGS AT THAT TIME, or they were destroyed by fire in 1880 the date of age in 1850 was 33, so the age was determined by this date.
William died December 23, 1900 Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky and is buried in Winchester Cemetery.
William served with the 11TH. Kentucky Cavalry for the Confederacy.
History of the battles William was a part of is available, especially Buffington Island, where he was taken prisoner with Captain Morgan. His interment was as a POW at Camp Douglas in Illinois. Where Camp Douglas was at that time is now part of a shopping Mall, but a brass marker commemorating it's having been there.
Many records have been found that show William was a Jailer and a Sheriff of Winchester…. also a Juror in cases brought before the Winchester Court.
He married Mary Adams daughter of William Adams and Sally/Sarah Bledsoe in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky on December 26th 1839.
(ADAMS AND BLEDSOE FAMILIES ARE UNDER SEPARATE LISTINGS)
Mary Adams was born August 10, 1815 Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky and died March 15th, 1886 Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky.
Some have entered her as “Polly” which is not this Mary. Mary is buried in Winchester Cemetery.
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM AND MARY
Five children are listed in the 1850 Clark Co. Census
ROBERT A. HOGAN Born December 2nd 1843
Mary had a brother by this name so it would seem natural to name a child after him. In another census his middle initial is “N”…confusing. Mary had a brother Nathaniel and Robert so I presume he was named after them.
He died in 1861 from illness when captured by the Union Army as a POW. He is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Kentucky. There was a wife, Adeline and a child as yet to be researched. However, William had a brother by the name of Robert D. Hogan from Bowling Green, Kentucky who was born in Tennessee, the one who traveled with Boone. It is confusing as to which one died, I think it was his brother as his age on the census shows he is a year or two years older than William. In the 1850 census Robert N. is age 6. However, I do not find this Robert either in any later Census, or in any of the Hogan deaths attributed to the Civil War so it is possible they both died.
SAMUEL HOWARD HOGAN was born September 26th 1853, as he is listed in the 1880 census, died September 1919, at age 67, buried in Logan Lick Road Cemetery Clark County KY.
Samuel is found working as a brakeman on the Railroad in Collinsville, Illinois in 1880 census at age 27 and in Pincham, Clark Co. Age 17 he married Sally Mann, (I have not traced her family) Sally is on the 1920 Census at age 71 The Mother-In-Law of Cole Young with her daughter, Alice Hogan, living in Jefferson Co., Kentucky. She is buried with her husband in Logan Lick Road Cemetery Clark County KY.
JAMES WILLIAM HOGAN (First child and our direct lineage)
Left Kentucky with his brother Stephen Lewis-Aldridge and family.
JAMES WILLIAM HOGAN was born November 18th 1840 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky and died in Missouri April 10th 1892. He is shown at age 9 on the 1850 Census with family.
James married Lucy Ann Ballard the 26th of October 1861 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky
Her parents were John William Ballard and Nancy Bybee of Albermarle Co., Virginia.
They are parents of Allen Jefferson Hogan. Lucy Ann Died 1885, newspaper clipping in history file.
(BALLARDS AND BYBEES ARE UNDER SEPARATE LISTINGS.)
JOHN THOMAS HOGAN born March 11th 1846 and died January 24, 1930. Buried in Winchester Cemetery, Clark Co. Kentucky. He is Listed as a 4 year old on the 1850 Census with family.
1920 Census they are both 73, they did not leave Kentucky.
JOHN THOMAS HOGAN married Elisa Jane Brandenberg who was born February 1846. Her parents were Joseph Brandenburg and Sarah Gravett. Joseph and Sarah were members of the Elk Lick Baptist Church, and are on the rolls as members. This church and their minutes to meetings can be found on the internet.
Elisa Brandenberg Hogan died January 24th 1930, and is buried in Winchester Cemetery, Clark Co. Kentucky
Children. SARAH M., SALLY MAE, JOSEPH G., JOHN SCOTT (he married first cousin Letha Hogan), John William. Other children accounted for in their history. In 1880 they are in Pincham County, Kentucky. Records of the Brandenburg lineage is on a another page.
HENRY JEFFERSON HOGAN born July 20th 1857 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky.
Known by the family as Jeff. He drowned and is buried in Logan Lick Road Cemetery in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky. He is not listed on the 1850 census so would be on the 1860 census, but is in the 1870.
CLIFTON TURNER HOGAN born November 18th 1847 OR (1854) in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky
In a census Clifton is listed as 16 and a Printer. He died between December 1888-1889 at 35 years of age, killed in a railroad cut. Newspaper report in family file. He was survived by wife and daughter Edith Hogan. He is not on the 1850 census and is presumed to be on the 1860 census. A newspaper report is available. This researcher had not traced this family.
SARAH ELIZABETH HOGAN born June 16th 1848 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky.
One year old on the 1850 census.
SARAH DOES APPEAR ON PAGE 15 OF 1860 CENSUS.
Home # 127,Winchester, as age 21 and at home.
(Did she marry and stay in Kentucky or go with her brothers to Missouri?)
Later….1870 Census she is at home with William and Mary, but James has married and so has Stephen Lewis Hogan, and they are off to Missouri. No Marriage records have been found.
EMILY ANN HOGAN born December 16th 1850
Needs research in the 1860 Census
I found her listed but may not have been born till after the census. No marriage record and no further information has been received.
STEPHEN LEWIS HOGAN born March 28th 1842 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky and died January 4th 1905 Monroe, Co, Missouri and Buried in Fox Cemetery on the Hall Farm, Middle Grove, Missouri.
Married Sallie Ann Rutledge who was born August 12th 1869 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky.
John Rutledge was her father and is listed as next door neighbors to the Hogans in the 1860 Census for Winchester with children. His wife is Honor Aldridge. By 1870 they are gone!! To Monroe County, Missouri.
There were 11 children
Family and children recorded under STEPHEN LOUIS HOGAN FAMILY RECORD. He is listed as the second son at age 8 on the 1850 census.
It is presumed that any HOGAN family members who remained in Winchester would be buried in the
same cemetery of record. Logan Lick Road is an old cemetery and I have not found it listed.
Searching the census records there appear to be no Hogans in the Winchester area before 1810. Some
early Kentucky HOGAN’S moved to Missouri and I am still researching those connections. There may be
a deviation in some dates but to my knowledge these are correct due to the fact that all
material was not garnered at the same time. Additions or corrections may be made along the way. All
records researched at the LDS library have been verified.
