John Thomas Hogan and Eliza Jane Brandenburg

Submitted by Marigold Hogan

JOHN THOMAS HOGAN AND ELIZA JANE BRANDENBURG. John Thomas Hogan, son of William Scott Hogan and Mary Adams married Eliza Jane Brandenburg. She was the daughter of Sarah Gravett and Joseph Brandenburg.

In the search for new home and promises of prosperity, thousands of pioneer families migrated ever north and west, into the Missouries, from Kentucky and the North Carolinas, and other southern states. They carried all their belongings in the "Prairie Scooner" as the covered wagon was called. There were possibilities of Indian attacks, lack of places to replenish their meager provisions. Illness often felled several families on any given wagon train, and the wagon master had to make the decision to press on. Not one would have wanted to be left behind. Their slow journey across the frontiers and out of the thirteen colonies and into states newly added to the Americas and beyond. Their courage and spirit enabled other emigrants to settle the American west. A five month journey would cover 2000 miles with a hope for the future, a new beginning across the desserts of Utah and the great Salt Sea, some through the parching deserts of Nevada and the magnificent Sierra mountain ranges. southward they came through what was then Mexico, the Texas ranges where millions of head of cattle found home after the buffalo left the grazing lands forever........Ever onward they would spread into what would become Pacific Coastal states of, California, Oregon and Washington. Some realized their dreams, others settled for a piece of land to homestead, others in industry with a small country store, others planted vineyards with cuttings from the Italian countryside of their birth. Schools brought children into a higher learning. Churches were built to show their faith, a place to attend and join with others who too, had left everything behind and .......... COME WEST.....
