Stephen Lewis Hogan

Submitted by Marigold Hogan

Stephen Lewis Hogan was born on 26th. Of March 1842 at the family home in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky. Stephen married Sallie Ann Rutledge on the 12th of August 1869 in Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky.

Stephen is the son of William Scott Hogan and Mary Adams Hogan of Winchester, Clark Co. Kentucky. Sallie Ann is the daughter of John Rutledge and Honor Aldridge, and was born the 4th Of October 1849.

Stephen and his new wife left Winchester, Kentucky about 1872, the first Census of 1880 finds them in Cooper County, Missouri, and then made a new home in Middlegrove, Missouri. Sallie Ann’s mother and father made the trip to Missouri with them. They raised many children and one could lose count if all had not received names! In the early days birthing was not as easy as we have it today. Many were born at home with a mid-wife, and sometimes a neighbor who was more experienced after having a few of her own, would be called. Doctors were not always in small towns, preferring the practice of the larger cities. It must have been a heart break for mothers and family when a dear little one that entered with such promise is take to live with the Angels.

Children of Sallie Ann and Stephen Hogan are:

Within the year the first child was born, a boy named John William Hogan born the 25th of May 1870 in Winchester, Ky. He may have been just a baby as they left Kentucky for Missouri. He married Mary Francis Worledge on the 31st of October 1889. She was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Worledge, and Mary Francis was called Mollie and was born in Clark Co. The Hogans and the Rutledges left Kentucky for Missouiri in 1872. According to the Garrard Co. Census Vol 9 ED 44. The Worledge family of seven lived in or near Bryantsville, Ky.

Henry Clifton Hogan was born 30th off December 1873 in Union, Monroe Co. Missouri. Henry Clifton does not show up on the next census in Missouri for 1880 where the next child Letha is recorded.

Letha Ann Hogan was born the 20th of December 1875 in Middlegrove, Monroe Co, Missouri. Letha married her first cousin Joseph Scott Hogan. (He was known by the name of Scott as in the above Obituary) and remained in Kentucky .As yet I only have one child for her by the name of Annie. Letha died a tragic death when she backed up to a fireplace and her clothing caught fire. She ran outside it was said but did not survive. She pass away on 3rd of February 1966, and is buried in Winchester Cemetery.

Infant baby born on the 23rd of December and left this world to live with the angels the same day. The family must have been devastated at the loss, and a simple country Christmas was just a few days away.

Alice Dean Hogan a twin daughter added to the family on the 19th of March 1880 and her brother was named Albert Dean Hogan. Alice married John William Embree on the 19th of August 1900, and as we see Albert married a sister of Johns, Mildred Embree in Monroe Co. Missouri. The date I have for Alice’s death is 30th of May 1960, and her twin Albert passed on 6th of November 1967.

There is another researcher who has followed and recorded the Embree family history and I appreciate her helping me with this record.

Rollie Price Hogan, another baby boy to add to the mix was born on 22nd of February, 1883 in Monroe Co. Followed by a twin brother Ollie Price Hogan. Rollie was only 4 years old at the time of his passing in March of 1887. Ollie grew to adulthood and married Effie Hutton in St. Louis Missouri. Ollie passed in 1935.

Mary Jane Hogan was another little girl born on 21st of August 1885 in the family home in Monroe county, Missouri. Her date of passing is Oct. 4th. 1962. Mary Jane chose as her marriage partner Herman Blake.

With such a large family it was good that father Stephen was a farmer and could support such a house full of little ones, and there were two more as yet unaccounted for.

Nina Honor Hogan arrived on January 28th 1888 at the families home in Monroe County. When she was of age she chose to marry Clarence Poer on 17th of March 1909. I have her death date as 20th of January 1977.

The last to arrive, and I’m sure mother was very tired by then was another little girl with a pretty name of Nellie Viola Hogan. She came into the family on the 14th day of June 1891. She completed this Hogan family. Nellie married Stephen Brown, I do not have the date of their union. Nellie passed on the 4th. Of April 1907.

Sallie Ann Rutledge Hogan died on the 30th. Of August 1910 in Monroe County,Missouri.

As added family information, John Rutledge was born in 1824 in Clark Co. Kentucky and married Honor Aldridge the 18th of December 1845 in Clark Co. she was born about 1828 in Winchester. John Rutledge’s father was Henry Rutledge born in 1798 in Winchester and married 18th of March 1819 to Catherine Bouler/Boulware. Henry Rutledges’s father was John Rutledge who married Valentine(Sally) Murphey. She was born in 1783 in Surry/Yadkin County, North Carolina, the daughter of Joseph Murphy of Rowan County, N. C.
