Contributed by Kelly Parks,
This all started when I got the death certificate for William S. King. It says he was born in Estill Co. and parents were Steve King and Mary Lilly. I thought his father was Robert Stephen King. I havenít found any Steve or Stephen married to any Lilly. I havenít found Steve or William S in the 1850 census. There is a John Lilly that married a Lucy Lilly.
I have now identified all the Stephen that married and are found in the census of Clark and Estill. None of them could be the father of William S King. I do know that Stephen ďFrancisĒ King born ~1827, who married Elizabeth Potts is a brother. I wonder about the John King who married Lucy Lilly in 1827.
I am not sure if Robert S KING is related to those Kings found in Estill. I think it a very good possibility. R.S. King was from Bourbon Co. before his marriage to Sarah Crutchfield. In 1845 Clark (A later (1880ís) record I found says that my William S and his son Samuel F were of Bourbon Co.

King family update
DNA is a funny thing.... It doesn't lie, but it does it always follow the paper trail (or the path we thought it should) or what we have been told that was our family. After 8 long years of wait and wondering, maybe I understand the result of my King DNA. First let me say that my fatherís Y- DNA should be from William Sanford King born 1832 but this does not match the Y-DNA of Stephen Francis King as I thought it should have based on my assumption of the paper trail. There is still one King family from the Clark/Estill area without DNA and this is Robert Stephen King who married second in 1845 to a Crutchfield. Robert and my William have several connections through their wives.
My father's DNA, because I have no proof how far this issue goes up my tree and where my father DNA might have been confused or even if it was. My questions seem to be changing daily as well as my answers.
Where to start.... 8 years ago... I sent my father DNA sample to family tree. There is one "KING" sample from Estill County KY King family that I hoped to match since I been stuck at William Sanford King born 1832 all my researching years. (He is not in the 1850 census, Death Cert. says father Steve King and mother Mary Lilly) I don't match, booo hooo, I wasted 20 year researching the wrong family. Less than 2 years after my test was posted a Dan Griggs contacted me and said we match DNA, ok his Griggs was in NC. I don't see a connection. Then another set of King from Estill and Clark area get tested, still not a match there. There is still Robert Stephen King born 1787 that married Crutchfield in 1845. Was my Wm Stanford King a grandson? I look for a volunteer for DNA, but can't find one. In the mean time I look for Brain King from Stephen Francis King (who married Potts) thinking he is the brother of my Wm S. King, until DNA show me it was not so. I do know that SFKing had son Crittendar King married Mary King, the daughter of my Wm S. King. The 1880 census list Crittendar King in both households, but when listed in WmS's (Bourbon County) he is list as nephew and not son in law, Mary and Crittendar marry April 1881. That was when I began to question my own non paternal event. SFKing did matched that line I researched for 20 years. So I wait and watch for some clues and another match. Last year I was contacted by Christopher Smith who was researching a known non-paternal event that happen in 1960's. Still no clues there. They also are stuck as I am.
Still there is no RSKing DNA, but on June 18, 2012 a new sample was posted that matched mine again. And this time it is a near perfect match. This sample is from John Milton Ware born 1821-4 (he left Clark County are round 1842 after a big court case dated 1839-41. John Milton Ware was the youngest son of Lydia Ware and unknown father. She had 3 sons and a daughter between 1814-1824. Only one child stayed in Clark County after that 1840 court case. This was Harvey Ware who married a Crutchfield. That seems simple, but this story continues as of June 22. The researcher on the Ware family, Marianne, sent me a copy of the first record of Lydia Ware in Clark County. It is a 1813 record where Lydia is called as a witness in Johnson vs Jones. Also called as a witness is a Wiley Griggs. Wow that got my attention, because my first match was to a Griggs. I did a little checking and there is Eliah E Johnson that married in 1823 in Clark KY to Lavina Griggs. I am sure there are more connection between these families and the Griggs and with a little time we will find them. I went back to Family Tree and called up my y-dna matches. There are now 3 Griggs with DNA.
Paternal Clement Griggs; b. 1770, VA
Paternal James Griggs, b 1750- -d unknown
Paternal Lewis Griggs born 1806 Anson, NC
Then I find Clement Griggs, his father..... Minus Griggs died in 1816 in Clark County KY.
So I email my old friend Dan Griggs who question me so long ago. He told me yes he knew who Wiley and Clement and he would help me sort this out. This is where we are currently..... Trying to figure out how King and Ware family can have Griggs DNA. (Griggs has 3 samples that closely match, making theirs much more reliable as the true family surname or the Ware or my King)
