Rankin and Harrison families in Kentucky

Adam Rankin and Martha McPheeters married in October 1782. Adam became the first minister in Lexington, Kentucky when he moved his family there in October of 1784. Rev. Adam was ordained in the Presbyterian Presbytery in October 1782. Among his congregation were said to have been Daniel Harrison and his wife Ann Patton Harrison. Rev. Adam and Martha Rankin had a large family. The two that are the subject of this article are Samuel Rankin and Adam Rankin, Jr. Samuel Rankin was born on February 17, 1784. Adam, Jr. was born in Kentucky on January 3, 1791.
Daniel Harrison was the son of Jesse and Sarah Harrison. He was born on September 2, 1760 in Virginia, probably Rockingham or Augusta Counties. He married Ann Patton, the daughter of Matthew Patton on January 29, 1784.
The exact date of their removal to Kentucky is unknown. There is a record of Daniel Harrison riding with Capt. George Baxter’s Company when they were ordered to guard a party of British prisoners to Winchester (Settlers by the Long Grey Trail, by J. Houston Harrison, 1935.) in 1782. The first documented proof is when Daniel deeded land to his brother. The court record in Clark County, is dated May 1814.
There are six children mentioned in Daniel’s will. The names we have records for are: Margery Harrison Maxwell born May 16, 1785; Benjamin Harrison; Patton D. Harrison born November 2, 1795; Sarah Harrison; and Hannah Harrison. Sarah and Hannah were said to have been born in Kentucky between 1790-1800.
Sarah Harrison married Adam Rankin, Jr., the son of the Rev. Adam Rankin on December 22, 1815, and the marriage bond was recorded in Clark County, Kentucky. Adam, Jr.’s brother, Samuel Rankin married Hannah Harrison on January 11, 1817. This was his third wife, as his previous wives had died. According to the 1820 census records both of the young couples resided in Fayette County. Adam and Sarah moved to Maury County, Tennessee by 1823 and Samuel and his family had moved there by 1830.
In 1838, Adam and Sarah moved their family to Mississippi. Adam died in 1852, and Sarah died on September 10, 1869. Samuel and Hannah moved to Texas in about 1839. Samuel died September 23, 1842. Hannah died after 1860.
Adam and Sarah’s children include: William P. Rankin of Mississippi; Benjamin Harrison Rankin, moved from Mississippi to Texas; Martha Rankin; Theopholus Rankin of Mississippi, lived in Calhoun County, he died February 27, 1912 and is buried in the Sarepta Cemetery; James A. Rankin, died in 1866 in Mississippi; Mary Rankin; Olivia J. Rankin married Isaac Newton Hudson and died in 1871 in Lafayette County, Mississippi; Patton Rankin of Lafayette County, died May 6, 1921 and is buried in the Hopewell Cemetery; Josephine S. E. Rankin, married Thomas Felker, they moved their family to Panola County, Mississippi and she died after 1900.
Patton D. Harrison married Polly Elgin on September 28, 1820, and they had at least on child, Ann Patton Harrison, born in 1823. Patton died March 26, 1841 in Winchester. Polly survived him, and died on August 9, 1870.
Daniel Harrison died on March 16, 1823. He is buried on the family burial ground near Winchester, on the old Thomas Lewis Van Meter farm. Ann Patton is said to be buried there also. In J. Houston Harrison’s work mentioned earlier, he states that Ann Patton Harrison died in 1819, but, she is mentioned in Daniel’s will that is dated 1821. Daniel’s sister, Ann Harrison, has a marker in this same burial ground. These markers were erected by Daniel and Ann’s son, Patton D. Harrison.
