BACK TO FAMILY RECORDS INDEX

Robert Jones Family - Winchester, Kentucky
Submitted by Susan Reedy

ROBERT1 JONES was born Abt. 1818 in Kentucky1, and died Abt. 1844.  He married LAVINA SCHOLL (LUVINA) 12 Mar 1838 in Clark County, Kentucky2,3, daughter of STEPHEN SCHOLL.  She was born 1816 in Kentucky4, and died Aft. 1880.  Robert and Lavina were my ggg grandparents.  This information is based on their marriage bond from Clark County.  Unfortunately, I have no other records on Robert.  He assumedly dies around 1844 as Lavina remarries - a John Rutledge in June of 1844.  Unfortunately, John Rutledge died in April of 1848 and by September of that year she had married George W. Crim.

Child of ROBERT JONES and LAVINA (LUVINA) is:

2.                i.    JOHN THOMAS2 JONES, b. 14 Jan 1838, Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky; d. 14 May 1922, Confederate Soldiers Home, Pewee Valley, Oldham County, Kentucky.

Child of John Rutledge and Lavina  is:

                   i.    Nancy Rutledge, b. 31 Mar 1846, Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky

Children of George W. Crim and Lavina are:

                   i.    Sarah Elizabeth Crim b. 1849. Kentucky

ii.    Henry W. Crim b. January 1854, Kentucky

                 iii.    Mary Crim b.1855, Kentucky

iv.    William Bruce Crim b. 1857, Kentucky

                  v.    Ann Crim b. 1859, Kentucky

2.
JOHN THOMAS2 JONES (ROBERT1) was born 14 Jan 1838 or 1839 in Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky8, and died 14 May 1922 in Confederate Soldiers Home, Pewee Valley, Oldham County, Kentucky9.  He married NANCY LOUISE ROGERS 03 Jan 1865 in Pattonsville, Scott County, Virginia10, daughter of THOMAS ROGERS and ELIZABETH BISHOP?.  She was born 03 Oct 1841 in Pattonsville, Scott County, Virginia11, and died 06 Nov 1904 in Dallas, Dallas County,Texas12.

By the time John was 10 years old he had lost his father and already had two step-fathers.  The 1850 Clark County Census shows John T. Jones, age 11, living with George W. Crim his 2nd step-father, age 34.  George's wife Levina (sp), age 34, and a daughter, Sarah E., age 1.  By the 1860 census John is 21 years, living on a neighboring farm working as a farm laborer and then the Civil War started...

John joined the Confederate Army mustering in on 10/21/1861 at Prestonburg, Kentucky and serving 4 years.  He served with Ezekiel F. Clay for 12 months and then with John Hunt Morgan of  Morgan's Men fame until the surrender at Lexington in March of 1865.  John was wounded in his left arm at Cynthiana on the last raid in Kentucky.

It is interesting to note that Morgan's troops were in Abingdon, Virginia and surrounding areas in the summer and fall of 1864 and John married Nancy Rogers in January of 1865 a young lady from Scott County, Virginia a neighboring county.  Maybe it was while he was recuperating from his wounds that he met his soon to be wife.

In the 1870 census a James Parrish is shown in the Jones household.  He was 13 years old and working the farm.  Many years later on the application for admission to the Confederate home in Kentucky, John showed his half sister, Nannie Rutledge Parrish as a contact person.  Is James a relative?

It was not until the 1880 census that John's occupation shows he is a horse trainer instead of a farmer.  By 1901 the majority of the family has left Kentucky and have moved to Dallas, Texas working for another native Kentuckian, Ambrose Dudley Aldridge at the Electioneer Stock Farm.  There John, Sr. is the Superintendent and his sons work with him just as they had in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Sometime after 1904 and the death of his wife, Nancy, John left Dallas and moved his family to Itasca, Texas to train horses for a Dr. J. L. Murphey.  It was in 1906 that his son, Woodford is supposed to have died in Itasca.  After, Itasca there was Abilene, then Hillsboro where he trained for a R. E. Harper, and Fort Worth just to name a few cities.  A very nomadic life.

In 1914 John applied to the Confederate Soldiers home in Pewee Valley, Kentucky and was accepted.  Based on his application and the conditions for admittance to the home I assume he lived with his half sister Nannie Rutledge Parrish in Winchester to gain his residency requirements of 6 months.  He lived at the home as far as we know until he died in 1922.  John did apply for a veteran's pension in 1919 but whether he decided the amount was too small to live on or there were problems in obtaining it, (See letter in family file) he was back in the home by the 1920 census.  You could not receive a pension and live at the home.  A letter dated 1919 had a Winchester address for John in c/o a Rodney Haggard, so he may have been trying to live away from the home for awhile.  In the 1920 census, John shows he is widowed and is 78 years old which would have made his date of birth 1841.

We don't know what made John leave Texas and his family to go back to Kentucky to the soldier's home.  Was it a yen to be back in Kentucky where he was raised and among the people and horses he knew in his prime or were there family troubles that drove him from Texas? It seems strange that he would leave his sons and daughters to go live with a group of elderly men in a rather structured sort of life at the home.  Horse training was changing and I know the sons were having to create new lives so maybe he did not want to be a burden.  All this is speculation.

John is buried at the Confederate Cemetery at Pewee Valley.  It is a beautiful, serene location.  Well maintained.  He is in a good resting spot.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate from the Commonwealth of Virginia showing that John T. Jones was 27 in 1865, born in Clark County, Kentucky and was a farmer.  Nancy was 22 years old born in Scott County, Virginia.  Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Rogers.

Children of JOHN JONES and NANCY ROGERS are:

                   i.    ELIZABETH R.3 JONES, b. 30 Oct 1865, Virginia21; d. 28 Jan 1921, Eastland, Eastland County,Texas; m. JAMES A. BENCINI, 16 Dec 1903, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas22; b. Abt. 1862, Tennessee23.

In the 1900 Federal census, Callie and Ben were living with John in Lexington and Ben was listed as a horse trainer.  Callie's parents, Watson and Nancy lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky.  Ben's middle name could possibly be Venable, a family name.

Notes for WOODFORD BUCKNER JONES:

Woodford's name may possibly have been derived from the surnames of the wife of Colonel Ezekiel Field Clay. He was John T. Jones commanding officer the first year of the Civil War.  Clay's wife, Maria Letitia Woodford's parents were John Thornton Woodford and Elizabeth Hawes Buckner.  This is just supposition...
