The first letter is written by Ezekiel Clay to my gg grandfather in defense of his loyalty to the Confederate cause and his loyalty as a Confederate soldier. Maybe as a reference for a job...There were two John T. Jones in the general area at the time and one was a deserter. The only reason I know this, is I got his records sent to me instead of my relatives when I started my research and was very surprised to think this was my my gg grandfather based on everything I had heard from my family. After my gg grandfather passed away some family member in the late 1920's wrote the Confederate home asking for records because they wanted to join the Daughters of the confederacy or some such group and again the mention of the two Jones men came up and the Commandant of the home said he was sure she must want my relative's records..... :-)

This is the letter John Jones received in Winchester telling him he could move into the Old Soldiers home in Pewee Valley. He was staying with his 1/2 sister Nannie Parrish, though I have not been able to find her in Winchester. She was supposed to have married a Henry Parrish. Nancy or Nannie was the daughter of John Rutledge and Lavina (Luvina, Levina) Scholl, Jones, Rutledge, Crim born in 1846. According to the family she and John were close.

John had been residing in Texas for the past 15 years and had to fulfill residency requirements to show he lived in her home for the 6 months necessary to qualify for admission into the home in Pewee Valley.
