Generation No. 2

2.  ENOCH2 LOWREY (UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1763 - 1774 in VA, and died Bef. 1827.  He married LYNFORD UNKNOWN.  She was born in VA, and died Aft. 1840 in Clark Co., KY.

Notes for ENOCH LOWREY:

Enoch & his family were listed in the 1810 Madison County Federal Census.

There are 5 children under 10, 2 males and 3 females;

2 children between the ages of 10 and 15, 1 male and 1 female;

1 male child between the ages of 16 and 25;

1 male between the ages of 26-44; and finally

1 female between the ages of 26-44.

This census also shows Enoch owning 7 slaves.

On January 12, 1815, an Enoch gave permission for his daughter Elizabeth to marry William Kelly in Madison Co., Kentucky.

1820 Clark Co. Census

Some Lowrey researchers believe that Enoch was the son of Thomas Lowrey, Sr.  I believe that he was the brother of Thomas or possibly a cousin. This theory is supported by the deed from Chilton Allen Merrill to James Lowrey dated 2 August, 1834, Clark Co., Kentucky. The deed specifically says, "It is fully understood that a life estate is reserved out of the above described tract to Lineford Lowrey mother to said James it being the same part on which she now lives and is in her possession."

This statement would leads one to believe that James Lowrey was the son of Enoch who was married to Lineford Unknown Lowrey.

A second point is that James married Jane Merrill, daughter of Andrew Merrill.  Andrew & Thomas were more than likely close friends and neighbors supported by various events in both of their lives and recorded documents.  If Enoch was the son of Thomas it is unlikely Enoch would have a son old enough to marry Andrew's daughter Jane since Thomas & Andrew were contemporaries.

Another possibility to this scenario is that there were two James Lowreys living in the area at the same time which could have been the husband of Jane Merrill.

A fellow Lowrey researcher posed the question if Enoch was Thomas' brother, why didn't he give testimony for Thomas at his Revolutionary War hearings in 1832?  I believe the reason was that Enoch was dead or had left his family and was living elsewhere. There are Clark County Court documents to support the "death" theory.

First, Lineford gave permission for her daughter, Mary, to marry John Handly in September 1827, Enoch does not appear in this record.

Second, in 1831 Hiram, the son of Enoch, and his mother, Lineford, purchased land lying in Clark Co., Kentucky from the heirs of Richard Graham. The deed records have the following clause, " Linneyford Lowrey the mother of the said Hiram is to have a life estate in ___ the land hereby conveyed ___ so much as included in the place where Enoch Lowrey formerly lived and at her death the same is to go to the said Hiram..."

Notes for LYNFORD UNKNOWN:

Lineford died after 1840.

Hiram & his mother, Lineford, bought 118 acres of land in Clark County in 1831 from the heirs of Richard Graham of Pennsylvania.

In 1836 Hiram & his wife Peggy sold this tract to Thomas Lowrey, Sr and his son, Anderson. The 1836 land deed to Thomas & Anderson contained the stipulation that Lineford would have a lifetime estate on the property of approximately 12 acres.

Four years later, Thomas & Nancy make a "quit" to Edmond C. Kerr for this same land. The land transfer from Thomas & Nancy to Edmond is recorded in Clark Co., Kentucky, Deed Book 29, Page 579, dated 8 February 1840. A clause in this deed reads, "...it is expressly understood by the contracting parties that the widow Lunford (Lineford) Lowrey holds a dower right for a lifetime estate in the twelve acres of land included in the above boundary which the aforesaid Lineford Lowrey is to hold until her death." Therefore, Lineford died some time after 8 February 1840. Further research into Edmond C. Kerr's land deals in Clark County may reveal a more specific date of death for Lineford.

Children of ENOCH LOWREY and LYNFORD UNKNOWN are:

                   i.    JAMES3 LOWREY, b. Abt. 1793, VA; d. Bef. 1885, Clark Co., KY; m. JANE MERRILL, 09 Feb 1815, Estill Co., KY; b. Abt. 1795, VA.

Original Text:

Thomas Lowrey was born on 20th day of August 1760 in St Mary's Co., Maryland. At the age of 3 he moved to Stafford Co., Virginia where he lived until he was 25 years old.

Thomas lied about his age and enlisted  in 15th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line, at the age of 16. He served, as a private, in the companies of Col. James Garrard, commanded by Capt. Elijah Trekheld & Capt. George Mountjoy, who were under the command of General Spottswood.  Thomas was present at the surrender of Major General Charles Cornwallis on October 17, 1781 at Yorktown.

The Pension Bureau's Records list of Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia, records that Thomas was pensioned on October 2, 1833 in Clark Co., Kentucky at the age of 74.  Moses Lowrey, Thomas' brother of Bath Co. Kentucky, testified for Thomas at the pension hearing.  Thomas was to receive a pension of $70 a year until he died.  Between 1833 and 1846 Thomas drew $210.00.  Neither Thomas nor Moses revealed their father's name during the pension hearing.   Moses did say that both Thomas and his father were Revolutionary War soldiers. To date their parents are unknown.

Nancy Dedmon married Thomas on October 16, 1805 in Orange Co., Virginia.  He was 45 and she was about 25 years of age. They had seven children, Louisa, Nancy, Garnett, Anderson, Thomas, Jr., and Jane, & William.  It has been suggested that Thomas fathered at least three other children Enoch, James, and Ludwell, in a previous marriage.

In 1816, at the age of 55, Thomas moved from Virginia to Kentucky.  He spent several months in Madison County before settling in Clark County. The earliest recorded land deed in Clark County for Thomas is 1828.  He bought 541/2 acres of land from the heirs of Richard Graham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This 541/2 acres were just part of Graham's 3500 acre tract of land in Fayette Co., Virginia now Clark Co., Kentucky.  According to the deed Thomas paid $1.00 per acre for the land. This tract of land became the Lowrey Home Place.  Nancy lived there until she died fourteen years after Thomas on 28th November 1860.

The record book of the Old Log Lick Church (of primitive Baptist denomination, at that time) shows Brother Lowrey as being received by experience.

Thomas died 25th day of November 1846 in Louisville, Kentucky according to his pension papers.  He was buried in the Log Lick Church Cemetery.  Some descendants report he was buried with full military honors as befitting a veteran of the War of Independence of the United States.
