The 1840 census broke ages into the following groups: Under 5, 5 but under 10, 10 but under 15, 15 but under 20, 20 under 30, 30 under 40, 40 under 50, 50 under 60, 60 under 70, 70 under 80, 80 under 100, and 100 & up; males were listed first, then females. The words male and female ar abbreviated as m and f respectively, and household is abbreviated as HH.
