~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Page 26
On this fifth day of November, 1887, at Cumberland City, County of Clinton, State of Kentucky, before me, W. H. Egleton a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Mrs. Mahala Payne,~ who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid Pension Claim, deposes and says: her age is 64, P. O. as above, Occupation - Housekeeper and that she is the wife of Dr. Asa Payne.
I have been married 44 years and I got acquainted with Sallie Brown about 7 or 8 years after my marriage.
About the time it was said that she and Eli Brown was married I was living a few miles from her. But of my own knowledge I don’t know that she and he were married, but it was reported that they were married.
I don’t recollect what year or month it was that they were married in and I have no records whatever that would give me any light on the subject.
I do not know the date of birth of any of their children or date of death of Eli Brown or date of death of his first wife. I am not related to client and I am not interested in
the case.
Q: Have you understood the questions asked you and are your answers to them correctly recorded in this deposition?
