Posted 04/20/2013 Surname: Bruce/Holbert
My brick wall relates to the family legend of the Indian ancestor. Any picture of my father leaves no doubt he is a descendant of a Native American. The questions arise with respect to documentation of the tribe and pinpointing the individual. I have definitely traced the Bruce family to Gallatin, Kentucky through census and marriage records. My father was Louis Ernest Bruce; his father was Luther Bruce; Luther's father was Thomas Jefferson Bruce and his mother was Harriet Ann Holbert - both of Gallatin in the mid 1800s. If any of the family stories are even close to truth, Harriet is the original Indian. Some family stories say she was from the Miami Tribe, some say it could be another, possibly Shawnee. Harriet's father was John, and as best I can determine her mother was Mary Ann Alcorn, again from Kentucky. I'm not looking for such documentation that could lead to some sort of entitlement... just some answers or confirmation even if it's from someone else's family legend. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, McClure, wegypsies42@gmail.com

Seems like everyone's brick wall in Gallatin County is locating burial records and/or location of early cemeteries/ family plots. I've not located burials for any of my Goins, Jackson, or Ray ancestors. All lived in Gallatin County, some on Craig's Creek since early 1800's. Charles Goins, a Rev War veteran, died in August 1857, age 104. His wife Elizabeth died before 1870, possibly in her 100's also. Moses Jackson, a Rev War veteran, died in May 1821, around age 61. His wife Chritina died about 1851, around age 90. William Ray, died around 1830, age unknown. Believe he had a brother John, who died in 1834, Sangamon County, IL. William Ray was a bondsman for his daughter Susanna's marriage to George Jackson (son of Moses) in November 1814, in Warsaw. Does anyone have any info beyond what is currently published? Bogardus's work and the headstone transcription project. Would like to locate family bibles, land records, diaries, etc, might help determine where our oldest Gallatin County ancestors were buried...Greg A. Bennatt, gbennatt@yahoo.com

I am trying to find descendents of John Osborn that lived in the Grant/Gallatin county area. In the 1870 census John Osborn is listed in Flat Creek Precinct of Grant County. Enumerated with John, age 38, are his wife Sarah A.(Jump), age 39, son Eli, age 20, son John W., age 16, son Willis B., age 14, son Jacob, age 5, daughter Sarah J. age 11 and daughter Eliza age 7.
John listed as age 47 in the 1880 census as being enumerated
in Sparta, Gallatin County with Sarah, age 48, Brack age 24, Sarah J. age 20,
Eliza A. age 16 and Jacob age 14.
In the 1900 census John, age 67 is listed as living with his son Jake, age 33 in
Grant County, Flat Creek Preccinct in Mag. 20. Jake is listed in 1900 with
wife Laura A., son Claud, son Clay, and daughter Emma J.
In 1910 census for Grant County Jake is again listed with wife Laura A., son
Claud, son Clay, daughter Emma, daughter Maggie, sons Yeager and Shupert.
In 1920 Jake is listed in Gallatin County, Warsaw Precinct with wife Laura, son
Claude, son Clay, daughter Maggie, son Yeager, son Shupert and nephew Jesse.
I am searching for relatives of Jacob's children that might still be in
Gallatin/Grant County. I am a descendent of John Osborn thru his son Willis

family line. Any suggestion you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I am looking for information about my great, great, great grandfather,
whose name was James Levell. We know from U.S. Census records that he
lived in Gallatin County from at least 1830 to 1860. We also know from
these records that he was born in Kentucky in 1807. He was married to a
woman
whose maiden name was Agnes Cox. We know nothing regarding James' or
Agnes' parents. They had at least six children, among them my great,
great grandfather Andrew Anderson Levell. Our family's oral history says
that James Levell was shot and killed about 1860 in a family argument by
a man named Charles Tandy, brother of Andrew Levell's wife.
It is probable that James Levell's death
occurred in Gallatin County in 1860. Would like to know if there
could possibly be records or newspaper accounts that would provide
additional information about his parents. His
oldest son, John J. Levell, died in Gallatin County on April 4, 1870, so
we know the family ties to Gallatin County continued beyond his death.

death, i.e. newspaper accounts, police records, etc., or where I might
look for burial records? Any help would be appreciated.Your

traveled down the line where they were blanched with steam and the cans
sealed. There were 4 pressure cookers each able to hold a about 100

I am a descendant of Urial Piercefield who married Catherine Collins (dau.
of Bartlett and Judith Leonard Collins) on Sept. 13, 1839 in Grant
County, KY. Urial's name is spelled a variety of ways from Rial, Ryal,
Royal, etc. I cannot find them on the 1840 census, but in 1850, 1860,
1870 and 1880 they are in Grant or Pendleton County, the last known
location on 1880 census for Pendleton County, 5th Magistrate District
next door to his oldest son Bartlett and Eunice Dennis Piercefield.
Urial aged strangely; in 1850 he is 28, in 1860 in Demossville he is 39,
in 1870 still in Demossville he is 49 but in 1880 he is 67. I cannot
find Urial or Catherine in 1900 census. I cannot find a burial or death
certificate. Many years they lived next to son, Bartlett but they are
not buried there Pleasant Ridge.
Can anyone help me find Urial and Catherine at the time of their death
or when they are first married? They are not with Catherine's mother in
1840 either. Any help will be appreciated,
Lori Piercefield Fox, Portland, MI

I am searching for information on William Eaton family..
My information shows William Eaton (1773-1817) came to Gallatin Co Ky with his
wife Nancy Ann Bryan sometime after their May 19, 1793 marriage in Frederich
MD. William died June of 1817 in Gallatin Co. Some time later, Nancy migrated to
Indiana. It appears some of the children went with her. There were 12 children
and some were adults by the time their father died and may have stayed in KY.
I am interested in information on any of the family. Listed below are the
children
John b.1794 Samuel b.1796 James b.1797 Nancy b.1800 William Jr. b.1801 Mary b. 1802 |
Millie b.1804 Blewford b.1809 (I have seen different spelling) Malinda b.1810 Greenup b.1813 (settled in Brownsburg IN) Josian Osa b 1814 Charles b. 1816 (my connection-died in IN) |
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Barney Eaton barney@texas.net

I would like to find information on Barnett Noel born 1793 who married Sally Jones, John Noel bn 1783 who married Frankie Maddox and then Elizabeth Brock, and Phillip Noel bn 1805 who married Elizabeth Yeager. I feel that they are related or connected somehow and would appreciate any help you can give me to help me make the connection. Any suggestions on how to get any more information on this
family. It has two basic connections. A whole lot more than I have ever come
across. John Glenn, the son that served in the War of 1812 was discharged in
Gallatin County May 10, 1815. The additional clue is that Joseph McCann was
also there at one time. I appreciate your help. This is really my "Brick Wall".

I've "rescued" the original marriage affidavit and
certificate for Elijah SWANGO and his bride Mary Ellen WALTERS both of Gallatin
County, Kentucky who were married on the 2nd of January 1868 at the home of
Oliver HAMILTON. The officiating minister was Benjamin TILLER and the witnesses
were Oliver HAMILTON, F.M. GRAHAM, Patrick WELDON, and Harrison FURNISH. I'm
hoping to be able to locate someone from the family so that these precious items
can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you
are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
