1) WILLIAM HOLIFIELD, born April 7, 1784, North Carolina, died June 23, 1860, Graves County, Kentucky, was said to have been the son of Oliver Holyfield, of Chatham County, North Carolina. No record of Oliver or any other Holyfield has been found in Chatham County. According to the 1860 census mortality schedule, William was born in South Carolina, and he died in 1860. He was married to ELIZABETH COPELAND by Christian County, KY marriage bond dated September 27 , 1809. She was born 1782, North Carolina, died April 12, 1864, Graves County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Abel Copeland of Chatham County, North Carolina.
William enlisted as a private in Captain Robert Smith’s Company, Kentucky Detached Militia, November 20, 1814, and was discharged May 20, 1815. He served under Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.
In the 1810 census an Isaac Holifield was listed as head of a family in Christian County, Kentucky. (This could have been his second name.) The family was living in Henderson County, Kentucky in 1820, where on Deer Creek, he had received a hundred acre land grant in 1819. Since 1822, they had lived in Graves County, Kentucky. In 1824 he was one of eight members of the first county court of Graves County, Kentucky.
He was the first Methodist preacher in Graves and Hickman Counties, Kentucky. He was a supporter of some of the first candidates of the Democratic Party. He died after a ten day illness of bilious fever. He and his wife had seventeen or nineteen children, of whom, either three or five became Methodist preachers. One account said that seven sons and three daughters lived to maturity. William and Elizabeth are both buried in Bethel Cemetery, Pryorsburg, Kentucky.
