Graves County was formed in 1824 from Hickman County. It is located in the Jackson Purchase region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 321 to 580 feet above sea level. In 1990 the county population was 33,550 in a land area of 555 square miles, an average of 60.5 people per square mile. The county seat is Mayfield.
