Estate of J. L. BURTON probated.

LEITCHFIELD NEW; HARVEY E. ROBERTS, son of H. H. ROBERTS, who enlisted in the Regular Army in 1897, and attached to COMPANY F, 8th REGIMENT, stationed in HAVANNA, died on DECEMBER 21, 1899 of DYSENTERY. He was in his thirtieth year of age.

MR. JOHN J. MONROE SR. one of OHIO CO. most respected citizen, died at his home near Horton on DECEMBER 30, 1899, he was buried in the BETHE CEM.

MR. THOMAS J. KEOWN age 67 married MISS LIZA SMITH age 72, on DECEMBER 28th, this is his second marriage and her first.

In WEST PROVIDENCE 3 miles from ROCKPORT, KY on JANUARY 3rd, MRS. LOUIS BURTON went on an errand, leaving her 8 month old baby in a little chair near the fire with another child a little older as an attendant. Soon after she left the house, she heard the children crying, but did not think anything of it. On returning to the house, she found that her baby had fallen with its head in the fire and was frightfully burned. The older child was also burned in trying to save the other. The baby suffered greatly all day and died that night.

NOTE; In the JANUARY 31 issue of this paper it is noted that LILLIAN, the little two year old daughter of NOEL BURTON, who was burned on December 30th, died from her burns on the 29th.

MR. BENJ. P. RAFFERTY died at his home near here this morning. He leaves his wife and several children.

On Christmas day on the farm of MR. MIKE TIERNEY, DAN, MIKE and ANDREW BURK while drunk, shot and stabbed to death MR. J. P. McCARVER. MR. McCARVER was a stranger to the area, coming from Texas selling cider, coffee and other items. The boys gave themselves up to the officers in Hancock co.

W. T. AULL, Deputy County Court Clerk of Daviess co., died on the 2nd of smallpox at OWENSBORO.

WILLIAM J. McNEAL, an aged farmer of LAUREL CO. was found frozen to death near his home on the 2nd.

JAS SIPES died on the 11th about a mile below LEWISPORT of meningitis. Only a week before his father died of pneumonia. Young Sipes was about 20 years of age.

GEORGE HARL died on JANUARY 13th near FALLS OF ROUGH, GRAYSON CO. KY, he was the brother of MR. J. P. HARL. He was born in MEADE CO. KY on APRIL 18, 1826. He can to this county at an early age, and later married MISS EVELINE WILSON daughter of WARREN WILSON. They had six boys and four girls, of which eight now live.

MR. JAMES MEDCALF of MAGAN, died of old age , he was in his 87th year. He was also called JIM CAPP. He was buried in his family cem.

MR. JOHN E. LANDRUM died at his home near Spring Lick on the 22nd of consumption, he was buried in the family graveyard. He was the 3rd son of THOMAS LANDRUM.

MR WARREN L. TURNS, formerly of this county, died at his home in MUHLENBERG county recently. He was about 45 years of age and leaves his wife and two children.

MRS. ELIZA SHREVE, wife of JAS L. SHREVE died at her home near Shreve this county on the 21st of heart problems. She was buried in the PLEASANT GROVE CEM. She leaves her husband and one child.

Old Uncle PAT KILCOYNE, the well known old Irish well-digger, died at the county poor house on the 25th of old age. He had lived in this area for many years and is well known. It is thought he was almost 100 years old. He was taken to LEITCHFIELD for burial.

DR. S. A. GILLESPIE of REYNOLDS, died on the 5th of old age.

MRS. KATIE MAPLES, widow of the late JACK MAPLES, died at her home five miles east of HARTFORD on the 5th, she was 82 years of age.. and buried in the family graveyard.

MR. S. J. RICHARDSON who lived near Buford, died on the 3rd of lung trouble, he leaves his wife and several children. He was buried in the Mt. Carmel cem.

.NOTE; Same paper, same page,...... BUFORD NEWS, dated MARCH 5th... MR. SAMUEL RICHARDSON one of our best citizens, died on the 30th after only a few days sickness, He was born March and was nearly 65 years old. He was twice married, raising a family of 20 children, but only 11 children and his widow survive him. He has been a member of MT. CARMEL church since 1863 and was buried there on the 3rd.

BARDSTOWN, KY..... Little Lulie Nally, age four years, daughter of JAMES NALLY of Botland, this county was playing around in the yard on the 24th, where some workmen were digging post holes, when she fell into one and was drowned since water had collected in the hole.. She was found in a few minutes after she fell, but it was too late.

Fulton, Ky.... Mary the 9 year old daughter of JAMES RUCKER, a farmer living near town was instantly killed by her 14 year old brother on the 24th.. He was preparing for a hunt, and his gun went off, striking her in the neck.

A. C. ELLIS of near HARTFORD, received a telephone message from Morganfield, Ky on the 21st of the death of his uncle by marriage MR. J. C. H. HOUSTON of that place.

Died at her home near White Plains, KY on the 10th, Mrs. Bell Tigg, wife of Rugus Tigg, leaving her husband and four children.

GUS HANCOCK, of CALHOUN, died at Hacket’s shanty on Rough River, on the 25th. He had been having chills for some time.

MRS. FANNIE DAVIS, died at the home of her son, H. H. DAVIS in Beaver Dam on the 21st and was taken to POINT PLEASANT for burial.

DR. S. A. GLLESPIE died at his home near REYNOLDS STATION on March 4, 1900. He was born and raised in this county and had been a member of Zion church for seventeen years. He was a Baptist of the first degree and he always stood up for the doctrine. He was also a Mason and he always said that the Masonic Lodge was the next thing to the church. He was a Democrat and stood up to his principles. He never was known to cast any kind but a Democratic vote. He was kind to the poor and always ready to lend a helping hand. So, dear friends and kinfolks and neighbors, weep not for Uncle Stern is at rest. He can see is way now, but when on earth he had to be led around by some friend.

DR. J. J. LAYTON, one of the best known citizens of Ohio County, died at his home in Rockport on the 31st. He leaves a wife and son. He was buried in the Rockport cem.

MR. LESLIE TANNER of the Central Grove area will marry on the 4th, MISS MYRTLE BROWN at her father (Wm Brown) home.

MRS. INEZ ADAMS, the widow and second wife of CAPT. JOHN ADAMS, died at McQudy, BRECKENRIDGE CO. on the 29th of consumption and was taken to HAWESVILLE for burial.

HAZARD, KY....APRIL 8TH..... WILLIE GRIFFITH, age 12 years is under arrest here on the charge of murdering his father, WILLIAM GRIFFITH age 60. The family comprising the father, wife and sons WILIE and McLEAN lived in a cabin on Leatherwood Creek, about 17 miles from here. Several days ago Griffith whipped Willie, Friday morning while Mrs Griffith and her son Mclean were in the kitchen getting breakfast they heard the explosion of a rife in the adjoining room. They rushed in and found Griffith lying on the bed, with his brains blown out and the gun resting on the side of the bed. Willie was on the run down the creek.

Son born to DR. J. L. CARTER of MAXWELL, KY on the 12th, his name is JOHN STUART CARTER.

MR. Wm FOSTER, of Beaver Dam received a telegram on the 16th telling him of the death of his daughter MRS. ROBERT McDONALD of PENNSYLVANIA, she had been ill for some time.

MR. E. G. HUNLEY of ROCKPORT, KY. met with a serious accident about ten days ago and died from the effects of it on the 13th. He fell off a fence and fractured his hip and suffered intensely until death relieved him. He was 66 years old and the father of a large family, all of whom are grown, he was buried at the Hopewell Church cem.

MR. ANDREW J. MAPLES, died at his home 6 miles east of HARTFORD, on the 6th. There was quite a similarity in the death of Mr. Maples and some of is relatives. His mother died on the 5th of March, his father on the 6th of November and brother on the 6th of July making four of the family that passed away on the same day of the month.

MR. WALLACE S. EIDSON of ELIZABETHTOWN, formerly a Deputy Sheriff of Hardin County and one of the best-connected men in the State, shot himself through the brain and died in Louisville on the 12th. He was 36 years old and had lived in Ohio County for a time till in 1883.

MR. FON ROGERS married MISS BEE BROWN, daughter of MR. S. T. STEVENS on the 17th.

Little four year old ROY OILER died on the 17th of brain fever and was buried at FORDSVILLE in the JONES cem.

MRS. MARY CROW, died on the 22nd at her home near HERBERT, OHIO CO. KY of old age. It is not known exactly how old she was, but she was a middle-aged woman when her neighbors, who are now old people, were children. From her statement of her age in youth, when certain things happened it is calculated that she was 103 years old at her last birthday. She was buried in the PANTHER CREEK CHURCH cem. three miles south of PELLVILLE.

MRS. W. W. JONES a most estimable woman of near ROCKVALE, BRECKINRIDGE CO. dropped dead yesterday. She was the mother of JOHN W. JONES, JOSEPH T. JONES and J.C. JONES all of whom are prominent farmers. Mr. Joseph Jones was in Louisville on a business trip at the time of the death of his mother. Mrs. Jones was 60 years old and her husband, who is a prominent and wealthy farmer, together with her son’s names above, survives her.

MISS ANNIE NEWTON, formerly a resident of HARTFORD, will be married tomorrow to MR. EDWIN CRAWLEY at the residence of the bride’s father REV. SILAS NEWTON of STURGIS, KY

Little FRANCIS KELLER, daughter of MR. MRS. FRANK KELLER, who were residents of HARTFORD up until a few weeks ago, died of typhoid fever at the residence of her parents at NEW ALBANY, IND. a few days ago.

ADABURG, KY..... A little son of MR. WASH WEDDING received fatal burns Friday morning. Its cloths were burned off of it and it died Saturday morning and was buried Sunday in the Catholic cem. near Whitesville.

MR. JOHN STEVENS of this county, living on the banks of Tradewater River, near the Wilson warehouse bridge had a little boy drown when he fell thought a broken board on the bridge into the river below on the May 1st.

MR. M. H. NEAL died at his home four miles south-west of her on the 26th. He was 67 years old and a member of 11th KENTUCKY INFANTRY in the civil war. He was buried in the family graveyard.

Mr. Wm Steel, better known as UNCLE BILLE, a former citizen of HARTFORD, died at the home of his nephew MR. JAKE IGLEHEART of Rosine on the 8th. He will be buried in the OAKWOOD CEM. in Hartford today.

MR. M. G. HONK, former citizen of HARTFORD, but of late years living in ROCKPORT, KY. died at his home on the 7th of spinal meningitis. He was a blacksmith. He was buried in the Equality graveyard, he leaves his wife and little son... he was about 50 years of age.

Died at the home of her grandson-in-law MR. JOHN I. ASHBY, near ROUGH CREE LOCKS, on MAY 3, 1900. MRS. LOUISA HAMILTON, in her 84th year of age. Her maiden name was Crowe, she and her sister Olivia were raised by REV. THOMAS & MARGARET TAYLOR, two good people. They were HARRY P. TAYLOR’S great-grandparents. Her brother, three children, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren survive her.

In a fight at CANEYVILLE, on the 19th. between ED BRUNER and SAM CHILDRESS. Noah Elder was shot and killed by Bruner. Bad blood has existed between the men for some time and they net and renewed the trouble. Childress drew a knife and was advancing upon Bruner, when Bruner drew his pistol and fired three shots, one striking Elder, an innocent by-stander and one shot striking Childress in the thigh, making a bad flesh wound, thought it is not thought to be necessarily dangerous. Bruner was arrested.

Elder was an uncle of BUD ELDER, a former resident of Hartford, but now living at Caneyville.

Died near Buford, Ky of pneumonia on the 16th, MRS. MAGGIE HUDSON, wife of JEFF HUDSON. She leaves several children and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. She was buried in the family graveyard on the 17th

MR. CHARLES TAYLOR died at his home near PARADISE, this county on the 24th and was buried in the family graveyard. He leaves his wife and one child.

MR. JOHN P. LAWTON, who has relatives in Hartford and sometimes visits here was married on the 23rd at SOUTH CARROLLTON, KY. to MISS ELIZA MOOREMAN, an estimable young lady of that place.

Daughter born to C. C. BEARD on the 28th.

STEVE WILLIAMS, a well known farmer living near Calhoun was shot and badly wounded by JOE BLACK PATTERSON on the 27th.

A most distressing accident happened in the family of MR. WARREN BROWN, who lives about half way between PT. PLEASANT and SAMLLHOUSE on the 24th. His two little children a girl age 6 and a son age 10 found a old gun on the premises and none of the other members of the family knowing of their actions, proceeded to adopt it as a plaything. The little boy took the gun in hand and finding no cap under the hammer, concluded it was not loaded. However, he thought he would have some fun snapping it at his little sister and he broke off the head of a parlor match and used it for a cop. At the first snap the gun went off and the charge passed through the little girls arm and into her side, inflicting a mortal wound. The horrified members of the family hearing the shot, ran to the scream of the tragedy and found the boy almost dumb with horror and the little girl writhing in her own blood. She lingered in great agony until nightfall, when she died.

Gold has been discovered in Sulphur Lick Creek in Franklin Co. A company has leased the lands and will endeavor to develop the find.

MR. W. L. WHITE, who lives in the area of WHITE RUN, KY , has a handsome bright boy of six summers who has a history unparalleled in Ohio county in the way of living grandfathers an grandmothers. Claudie R. White, has seen six living grandfathers and one step-grandfather and five living grandmothers on one step-great-grandmother. Since Claudie’s birth, three have been called away to the rest that remains to the people of God to-wit Uncle Walker White and Uncle Elijah Boyd and wife. The others are also all good Christian people. The following are the names of those living on his mother’s side. Mr. Rufus Boyd and wife, first grandparents. Aunt Julyan White, great-great-grandmother. On his father’s side MR. STEVEN B. WHITE and wife and MRS. EXELL are first grandparents, Uncle KIT WHITE great-grandfather, his wife step-great-grandmother. Also Mr. James Exell, first step-grandfather. It will be noticed that the names above number 13. Who can beat this?

SMALLHOUSE, KY NEWS; MR. JAMES BULLOCK, who lived near the river abut a mile below Smallhouse, committed suicide on JUNE 2nd by running into the river and drowning himself. His body was found floating near Rumsey. His mind had been deranged but a few days. He was about 38 years old and leaves his wife and three children to mourn his death

McHENRY, KY..... MR. JAMES CARMON and MISS SALINA CARTER married last week.

MRS. DURBIN, wife of JAMES DURBIN died of consumption on the 30th at her home near SUNNYDALE. She was buried in the family graveyard.

CONTS MILLER, the 19 year old son of JOE MILLER of SUNNYDALE was drowned on the 30th while attempting to swim Rough River a short distance above Sullenger’s old mill. He and Elisha Durbin had been to Livermore with some logs and were returning on the north side of the river and found the boat gone and undertook to swim the river and when near the south side of the river young Miller gave out and sank from sight in the muddy waters to rise no more. His body was recovered Sunday after tireless work and interred in the family graveyard that evening.

MRS. NANCY BRYANT, wife of ASHBURY BRYANT living near ROSINE died on the 17th and was buried in the BETHEL CEM. She leaves 6 children.

MR. G. W. GRAFF, died at his home near Sanderfur’s Crossing on the 13th of consumption. He was buried in the Mt. Vernon Cem. He leaves his wife and 5 children, his wife is also very ill of the same illness.

MR. JOE DEXTER and MRS. RACHEL ADDINGTON are to be married today in EQUILITY, then leave for ILLINOIS where they will be making their home.

The wife of MR. DAVE JOHNSON, living about four miles east of Hartford, died on the 20th of stomach disease. She leaves her husband and several children. She was buried in the Milton Taylor graveyard.

FITZHUGH, the 7 years old son of MR. HENRY HURST, died at his parent’s home on the 1st of TYPHOID FEVER.

Near Sanderfur’s crossing about 3 1/2 miles east of Beaver Dam, this county, on the 1st. MR. JOE C. EVANS shot and killed CLEM GRAFF, son of GEORGE GRAFF deceased of Beaver Dam. Mr. Graff was with FOREST and CLEVE CHINN, all three were drunk... the fact that they went to Mr. Evens house is agreed to by all concerned, but after that the Chinn boys and Mr. Evans story are different. The court will have to look into the matter.

NOTE; In the July 18 issue of this paper MR. EVANS was cleared of any charges on this matter.

FORDSVILLE, MISS LIZZIE HOLLEY, a pretty girl of 17 years, committed suicide here by taking morphine. She left a note simply stating that she was tired of life.

A year ago her brother fell or jumped from a fast passenger train and met instant death, and only two months ago a sister 20 years old committed suicide at Point Pleasant, this county. An aged father and mother are left, this being their last child to end its career within twelve months.

BRECKINRIDGE NEWS; MRS. SAMUEL BLAND, one of the oldest persons in the county, died at the home of her son-in-law Charlie Oelze on the Hardinsburg and Cloverport turnpike on the 17th. She was one hundred and one year and six months old, being born in APRIL 1799. She came from Virginia at the age of 13 and was married to Samuel Bland in 1842. Five children were born to this union. Two survive, MRS. C. E. OELZE and HENRY BLAND.

CLAUDE HAYS, of OWENSBORO, the son of MR. J. R. HAYS died of consumption on the 19th and was buried in the WHITEVILLE graveyard.

MISS BETTIE RAGLAND, youngest daughter of the late J. W. RAGLAND died of dropsy on the 16th at her home in Beaver Dam. She was buried in the Rosine cem. on the 17th. This makes 4 members of the family who have died in the last six months.

MRS. JULIA MITCHELL in looking over the old papers that had been handed down by her brother, Milton Taylor, found some very antiquated documents consisting of three marriage licenses issued by Charles Henderson, then the County Clerk. One bears the date of December 24, 1812 issued to JOSHUA RENDER and POLLY JACKSON. Another marriage license issued to ELIAS JACKSON and Ann JACKSON, it bears the date of DECEMBER 4, 1817. And the third was issued to JOHN E. ARNOLD and CATHERINE JACKSON, bearing the date of DEC 2, 1818. The marriage ceremony in each case was solemnized by REV. THOMAS TAYLOR, who was the father of HARRISON D. TAYLOR and MILTON TAYLOR. These papers were given to Mr. A. C. ELLIS, who was the great nephew of the JACKSONS and by the courtesy of MR. ELLIS, we publish this item. The records in the County Clerks office here fail to reveal the marriage certificate of any but the Elias Jackson to Ann Jackson.

REV. M. M. HAMPTON was born DECEMBER 25, 1855. He professed religion at Lebanon, Butler co. KY at the age of 15 and joined the Presbyterian Church in which he lived until he joined the Baptist Church in Green River in 1889. He was licensed to breach in 1890, was ordained in 1891 by Dr. Coleman and others. His churches were COOL SPRINGS, GREEN RIVER, and MT. ZION. He died on SEPTEMBER 1, 1900, age 44 years, 8 months, 7 days.

MRS. NEVA BROWN HUNLEY, wife of MR. PORTER HUNLEY, died at her home near Paradise and was buried in the HOPEWELL CEM. on the 31st. MRS. HUNLEY was one of Ohio County’s fairest sweetest Christian women, whose life was spent in a devoted effort to make the world better. As a wife and mother, she was devoted, gentle and faithful as a neighbor and friend she was generous, charitable and tender, and she is now in the arms of Him who said “Blessed are the faithful, for they shall inherit, the Kingdom.

MRS. J. R. BRUNER, of OLATON, KY. was going home from her daughter’s MRS. W. B. McDONALD, who lived but a few hundred yards distance, on the 27th and on her way home, she fell dead on the side of the road. It had been about two hours and twenty minutes from the time she left her daughters until she was found by her husband , who was the first to pass that way. She apparently was in perfect health when she left Mrs. McDaniels. Heart failure is supposed to have been the cause of her death. She was 57 years of age. She was buried in the Olaton cemetery.

DEATH OF L. D. BENNETT, from a newspaper published in FAIRFIELD, ILL. contained the following account of the death of a man who was once a citizen of OHIO county.

After a illness of five months, L. D. BENNETT, of this place passed away last Thursday. His seventieth birthday anniversary was celebrated on the 16th of September last, at which time it was hoped he was much better than he had been. Later he suffered a relapse and continued to grow worse until death ended his suffering.

Mr. Bennett was born in Ohio County, KY. September 16, 1830. He was married in Kentucky to Miss Amanda Call on August 20, 1853. To this union eleven children were born, six of whom are deceased. Those living are; WILLIAM H. BENNETT of OKLAHOMA, CITY, OKLAHOMA, MRS. P. H. CHAMBERS, of Denver, Colo.; Mr. FRED A. BENNETT of FAIRFIELD, ILL. ; MRS. GEORGE F. ROSIGNAL of PARKERSBURG, ILL. ; ROY BENNETT of EDGEWATER , COLORADO.

He removed to WAYNE COUNTY in 1857, where he lived until the time of his death, excepting about seven months in the latter part of 1890 and the early part of 1891 which he spent at Brooksville, Fla. His first wife died NOVEMBER 27 1880. He married for the second time to MRS. REBECCA COCKRAN of XENIA on NOVEMBER 1 1881, with whom he lived the remainder of his days and who now survives him.

In politics he was a staunch Democrat. In 1858 he was elected Sheriff, which position he held for two years. He was also Sheriff from 1880 to 1882. He also served as Deputy Sheriff from 1876 to 1880. At the time of his death he was a Justice of the Peace.

MRS. EDA MILLER, widow of the late THOMAS MILLER of PRENTIS, OHIO CO. KY, died on the 26th. She was 64 years old and the mother of MRS. E. P. NEAL of this place.

At the home of her son J. W. LYTLE in OWENSBORO on NOVEMBER 8, 1900, MRS. M. J. WILLIAMS died of cerebral hemorrhage and her remains were buried in the family burial ground near Glennville, Ky. Mrs. Williams was born October 22, 1836 and married JOHN L. LYTLE. After the death of her first husband, she married JOHN H. WILLIAMS on JANUARY 17, 1867. MRS. WILLIAMS had spent some years in the home of her son MR. JAMES H. WILLIAMS, the druggist of this place.

C. E. WHITE, a farmer of McLEAN CO., KY, was killed on the 9th, when he was loading saw-logs on a wagon and they fell, rolling over him. Near the same place, WILLIAM WALTRIP was fatally injured by a sawmill. He was off-bearing lumber when he lost his footing and fell into the saw blade.
