......................

Quite a tragic killing occurred at the home of MR. JO MILLER, on HALL’S CREEK, at SULPHUR SPRINGS on the 18th.  Some trouble had come up between a son of Miller’s and a young Capitola Davis or Cap Davis as he is called and Davis in company of  J. G. DAFFRON, called at the Miller home to adjust matters.  Davis being a farm hand, who had been working for Mr. Thomas Duke in the Quality neighborhood.

Young Miller was not home, but his father, the old gentleman mentioned above, became engaged in a warm altercation with the visiting boys.  Hot words passed between the trio when Cap Davis raised  a shot-gun and fired at old man Miller, the full load entering his body and killing him instantly.  Davis claims that he shot in self-defense.  The quarrel, it is understood, was the result of family trouble of long  standing.

Cap Davis came to town yesterday and gave himself up to the authorities and was placed in charge of town  Marshal, C. E. MORRISON, who will guard him until his examining trial, which is set for tomorrow.

TAYLORVILLE, KY, AUGUST 8TH

A scene that reminded he older citizens of slavery days was witnessed to-day when Auctioneer Crabb stood on the Court House steps and sold Sy Lewis, colored, to the highest bidder.  A large crowd was present, but no one seemed anxious  to bid on the darky, probably because it was uncertain whether one could get any real benefit from the negro if he bought him.    He was finally knocked down to Arch Hays, a young farmer near town at $2.00.  Lewis was sold into servitude for period of nine months upon being convicted at the last term of court of vagrancy.
