SELECT, KY;  MRS. KITTY SMITH, better known as “AUNT KITTY” died the 28th of old age and was buried  in the graveyard near LUTHER ROGERS on the 29th.

SELECT, KY; MR. OSCAR KING, son of J. A. KING, died near NASHLAND, TEXAS on the 29th of typhoid fever.  The remains were shipped here for burial.

JAMES HABERTON died at his home in LIVERMORE on the 1st.  He was 55 years old and leaves his wife and 8 children to mourn him.

DUNDEE, KY.   MR. SAM SMITH, aged 72 years, died on the 8th of pneumonia.

DUNDEE, KY.  The little boy of  MR. J. C. SMITH, fell into the fire a few days ago and was so badly burned he died on the 9th.

DUNDEE, KY.   MR. LUM GULLEY, who lived on MR. JOHN GRAHAM’S farm died on the 9th.

Born to SHELBY ROCK of BEAVER DAM, on the 7th, twin boys.

OSCAR, son of  J. A. KING died at CHINA, TEXAS on DEC 29, 1902.  He left here September 1, 1902 with his brother-in-law, MR. A. A. IGLEHEART, and went to Texas, where he lived till his death of typhoid fever.  His remains were returned here to be buried in the Smith burying grounds.

MR. GILBERRT HOLBROOK has moved to OWENSBORO .

MR. JOHN RANDOLPH died at his home  near ROCKPORT on the 25th and buried in the Davis burying grounds.  He was about 50 years old and leaves four boys.

MRS. LIZZIE, wife of JOHN TEMPLE, died at LIVERMORE on the 25th of consumption, leaving her husband and four small children.

MR. S. M. HARDIN died on the 26th at BEECH GROVE, KY.  of a  stroke.

ALVA WILOUGHBY was shot and killed by H. O. DAUGHERTY in BAIZETOWN on the evening of the 24th after ALVA had attacked Daugherty.  Daugherty is now in jail awaiting judgment.

DR. ISAAC SANDERS, one of OHIO COUNTY’S oldest and most respected  physicians, died at his home in FORDSVILLE on the 28th. of dropsy.

Born to the wife of MR. JOHN V. BRITTON, at Salinas, Cal. on the 23rd. a fine daughter.  Mrs.  Britton was the former MISS BIRDIE NALL of  HARTFORD.

MR. J. W. SUTTON, who had left Kentucky in 1877 for OREGON, reports he has settled in BALLARD, WASHINGTON.

While hunting, THERODORE RILEY, age 14 of near BACKUSBURG, dropped dead, it is thought he had heart problems.

Little Cliffie, the three month old child of  Effie and Lacy DABNEY died on  DECEMBER 19, 1902.

MR. LON MARTIN, brother of JAMES MARTIN of FORDSVILLE, died on the 18th of consumption.  He was buried in the FORDSVILLE CEM.

MRS. SUSAN MARTIN, widow of  SAM MARTIN, who died about 16 years ago, died at her home near HORTON on the 17th and was buried in the BETHEL CEM. on the 18th.

MRS. MARY DUNCAN, wife of  ROBERT DUNCAN of LAZERNE, MUHLENBERG CO. KY,  died on the 22nd.  She was buried in the McHenry Cem.

MR. J. B. KIRK, aged 60, died at his home near OWENSBORO on the 20th. of heart problems.  This is the 3rd of the KIRK brothers to die of heart problems in the last six months.

MISS LULA HUFF died at her home near FORDSVILLE on the 26th.   She was the daughter of MRS A. D. HUFF who died three days before.  She was 30 years of age and was buried in the Fordsville Cem.

MRS. CAHAM, wife of  MARTIN CAHAM, died on the 1st and was buried in the CATHOLIC BURYING GROUNDS at LEITCHFIELD.

MR. CHARLES W. GRIFFIN, formerly of HARTFORD, is in JENNINGS, LA. where he is an electrician.

MR. CLARENCE FIELDS has been appointed to the railway mail service, and will be likely moving to CINCINNATI to make his home.

ANDERSON JOHNSON, 18 year old son of  JAMES B. JOHNSON, died on FEBRUARY 8, 1903.  He leaves his father, two brothers and one sister.  He was buried in the Shiloh burying grounds.

That gallant soldier of the Confederacy, CAPT. ED PORTER THOMPSON, died on the 4th in FRANKFORD of  Lagrippe.  He was born near Central, MEDCALFE CO., KY. on MAY 6, 1834.  His father was LEWIS M. THOMPSON of VIRGINIA.  While he was raised on a farm, at age 19 he began teaching school  until 1860 when he studied law till the war broke out.

OLATON, KY..... MRS. LOGSDON, wife of MR. Wm LOGSDON, died on the 5th. and was buried in the FARRIS GRAVEYARD.

NOTE;  From the MARCH 18th issue;  On  the 6th MRS. LOGSDON died at the age of 62, she had moved to Ohio county 21 years ago, being born in Hart county.    She leaves her husband and four sons and one daughter.... She was buried in the Olaton burying grounds...

MR. ELI BARRON, one of the oldest and most prominent residents of Daviess Co. died on the 12th in OWENSBORO.  He leaves three  children, MRS. R. E. ALEXANDER and MRS. SAM MORTON of OWENSBORO, and MR. JARED BARRON of  POPLAR BLUFF, MO.

MISS MARY MORRIS, of JINGO, died on the 8th of consumption and was buried in the MILTON TAYLOR CEM.

MR. P. H. HEFFEY, died on MARCH 3rd in LOUISVILLE where he had begun work in the I. C. R. R. ROUNDHOUSE.  He had only worked three weeks when he was taken ill of pneumonia.  He was born in IRELAND on FEBRUARY 26 1856.  He came to America while young and married MISS ANNIE B. FELIX, daughter of  JOHN I. FELIX, in OCTOBER 1883.  He leaves his wife and four children.  He was buried in the ST. LOUIS CEM.  He is a cousin of  PETER HAFFEY of  WHITESVILLE.

MISS NANNIE TANNER, daughter of  the late THOMAS TANNER of  the UTICA area, was hit and killed by an electric train in OWENSBORO on the 18th.  She was the sister of  MRS. D. F. WHITTAKER of Owensboro.. She was the aunt of  JAMES and SAM TANNER of OWENSBORO and MRS. E. P. THOMAS of HARTFORD.

MR. BARRETT BRATCHER, of BUTLER CO. KY. was run over by a train near DAN’S STATION on the 21st... He had been working for MR. MATTHEW CAIN rafting logs.

ELIJAH HILL,  a prominent farmer of PHILPOT, age 69 years, dropped dead on the 27th of heart trouble.  He leaves one son.

MRS. ELIZABETH SADDLER, of  BELL’S RUN this county, died suddenly of heart trouble on the 5th. at Whitesville, where she had gone to the funeral of her daughter, MRS. HENRY JOSEPH.  She was stricken upon alighting from the carriage and died instantly.

MR. EDDIE DAVIDSON died at the home of his father near Shreve of consumption, he was 31 years of age and was buried in the Roach Cem.

About two months ago, Henry Jahn, a son of T. Jahn living at Render, left home and his whereabouts could not be discovered.  Diligent search and inquiry was  made for him, but without avail.  Saturday, Mr. Jahn was walking past an old mine shaft near his residence when he discovered the body of his son Henry floating in the water in the shaft.  It is felt he committed suicide by jumping into the shaft.

JOHN HUGHES,  a well known farmer, committed suicide with a shotgun at the home of his brother-in-law, CHARLES CRAFTON, near MT. EDEN, this county on the 20th.  He had been ill for some time.

The DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE will be placed in  a dark vault and hence-forth hidden from public view.  A committee from the American Academy of Sciences reported to Secretary Hay that the historic manuscript was fading and advised that it be kept in darkness.

MRS. FLETCHER JOHNSON, sister of  ALVA TAYLOR and ARCH LEWIS, died on the 10th. in STURGIS.  Her mother was MRS. TAYLOR.  She leaves her husband and a one week old baby.

The planning of an Electric Railroad from Owensboro to Hartford is still coming together; it will by way of SORGHO, CURDSVILLE, CALHOUN, then to HARTFORD  between NUCKOLS and LIVERMORE.. It’s capitalized at $600,000 and the work will start this week, and is planned to be completed in eight months.  It is noted that each point of the route must raise $200,000, plus right of way, for the plan to go forward.

MAY 20, 1903 WEDNESDAY

SEBREE, KY.  MAY 16th.... Eleven year old ROBERT ASHBY, son of  JOHN ASHBY, was shot and killed by MRS. MARY WILLIAMS, thinking he was an intruder trying to enter her home.  John Ashby, a contractor had rented the home next to Mrs. Williams.  On  the evening in question Mrs. Ashby and son went next door to spend the evening, the boy running ahead, and banged on the door. Mrs. Williams, being alone, and supposed someone was trying to break in, got her gun, opened the door and fired into the darkness.... All parties are prostrated over the matter as they were on the best of terms before this.

CAPT. HENRY BALLANTINE, one of the oldest, wealthiest and best citizens of McLEAN Co. has died at his home in Calhoun of Bight’s disease.

George Cox, the 17 year old son of  MR. MRS. ALBERT COX of SUPLPHUR SPRINGS, left home on the 31st and has not been seen since.  As this is not normal, his parents are quite concerned for his safety.

The remains of a man was found in a small cave near Echols, on its finger was a ring with the name of JOHN ROARK on it.  It is felt this was the JOHN ROARK, who about twenty years ago was a miner at ECHOLS & had difficulty with William Thompson, a weight boss for the Bevier Mines, the result being that Thompson was shot two times, from which he later died and Roark disappeared.  His remains were buried in the woods near the cave.

DR. and MRS. A. F. STANLEY left on the 14th. for LAWRENCEBURG, for the burial of  Mrs. Stanley’s brother, MR. WILLIS PORTWOOD, who died at VERSALLES, KY. the day before.

REV. W. B. DOYLE of JACKSON, ALABAMA married MAGGIE SMITH, daughter of DR. and MRS. J. S. SMITH, of McHENRY on the 17th.

MR. M. P. McDOWELL, of  five and one half a miles east of HARTFORD, age 73, died on the 12th.  He leaves four sons and one daughter, all of which are grown.

MR. JEFF STERRETT, editor and publisher of the HAWESVILLE PLAINDEALER, died on the 6th. in his home in HAWESVILLE.  He was 71 years of age, and was the son of  WILLIAM STERRET and grandson of CAPT. MR. W. G. HARDWICK, on AUGUST 11th, died at his home in West Hartford. Billy, as he was known, was born MARCH 8, 1866 and was 37 years old.  He was the brother of CLARENCE HARDWICK. He leaves his wife and little daughter, and three brothers to mourn him. He was buried in the Oakwood Cem.

MR. H. O. SCROATER, who has operated SCROATER FLOATING PHOTO GALLERY for the past seven years,  is reported  to have left his wife and children last week, telling them he was going to COLORADO to set up a new business, and that he would send for  them at that time.  It was later learned he had gone to Cincinnati to join with the former house girl with the intent to marry her.  Her name is MISS BESSIE MARTIN who was born and raised in the ROUGH RIVER area.  For some time she had been living with her uncle MR. W. G. BENTON, who it is reported tried to stop them from leaving, but to no avail.

MR. CHESTER STEVENS left Monday for GEORGETOWN, KY. where he enters a theological seminary to study for the ministry.

MR. K. V. WILLIAMS and MISS S. M. ELLIOT, who married at the bride’s home in WADESVILLE, INDIANA on the 1st, arrived at MR. WILLIAMS’s home in BEAVER DAM on the 6th.

PROF. E. O. ROSS,  who had been teaching a commercial school MONESSEN, PA. died of paralysis on the 28th.  His brother RICHARD ROSS of HARTFORD and MR. BAKER RHOADS of BEAVER DAM, went to bring the remains back here for burial.  PROF. ROSS  was the oldest child of CHRISTOPER and DRUCILLA ROSS, his father preceded him in death several years.

OWENSBORO, KY... MR. SAMUEL BOTTOM of LOUISVILLE married MISS WILLIE ALEXANDER at the home of PROF. WAYLAND ALEXANDER, the bride’s uncle on the 5th, after knowing each other for six hours.

On the 7th., MRS. ALBERT FULKERSON, with her two children, was attempting to haul a small load of wood to where her husband was making molasses near Rockport, Ky.  She met with a fatal accident.  She had forgotten to lock the wagon wheel, and in going down a hill the vehicle crowded the mules and frightened them.  Mrs. Fulerson and her children were thrown off and the wood fell upon them.  The mother hastened to release her children not knowing  that she herself was badly hurt, one of her limbs being crushed to a jelly, besides internal injuries. She died of her injuries on the 9th and was buried in the Fulkerson Cemetery at Rockport.

Mr. ED DOCKERY of PROVIDENCE, thinking there was a burglar in the house, shot his wife, on the 29th.  She will recover.

MT. VENNON, KY  NOV. 1...... Last night at BRODHEAD, this county, JOSIAH SUTTON, aged 17, was accidentally shot  through the head and instantly killed  while in a Halloween frolic.  Horace Benton, age 20, one of SUTTON’S friends, who thought there were blank cartridge in his pistol, fired the fatal shot while carelessly handling the weapon.  Young Benton was so overwrought over the affair that he had to be restrained from committing suicide.  He is the oldest  son of DR. PERCY BENOTN, a leading physician of this town.
