James Alexander Scott

James A. Scott [February 1832-March 2, 1920] was born and raised in Green County in the Big Brush Creek area near Bloyd. He was the son of Price Scott and Nancy Millen, daughter of Alexander and Eleanor Millen. He was the oldest of five children. His grandfather, James Scott, and great grandfathers, Alexander Scott and David Preece/Priest,  were among the earliest Green County settlers, coming here from Russell County, Virginia in 1790. On March 2, 1856 he wed Mary Isabella 'Belle' Etherton, the daughter of Simon and Mary Scott Etherton. He was a farmer and worked in a nearby mill on Big Brush Creek. He is buried in the Taylor's Chapel Church Cemetery beside Belle, who preceded him in death on June 10, 1913, age 77.

Siblings of James were: John D. Scott who married Elizabeth F. Thompson; William Marshall Scott who married (1) Elizabeth Jane Elkin (2) Maggie Gee Fitch; a brother who died, name unknown, by age 11; and Lydia E. Scott who married Jesse Warren Thompson.
