"LAND FAMILY" of Henry County, Kentucky

Thomas Land was born March 31, 1817 to Jesse Land (b.1780, died somewhere between 1860-1870) and Sallie Land (daughter of John Land, b. 1756 VA and came to Madison County Ky. late 1700's). Thomas married Prudence Watkins [Prudence Land]* on November 24, 1838 in Henry County and died in August of 1850.  Prudence Watkins was born September 10, 1799 in Pleasureville, KY, d. 1863.  (After Thomas's death in 1850 she married his brother Abraham Land.  They are shown on 1860 census with son Evan Land and daughter Sarah Land (who were born to Thomas). Son Evan Land (July 30, 1839-November 21, 1930) married Rachel Elizabeth Blackaby (May 6, 1844-August 28, 1922).  Evan is buried in the Land-Browning cemetery on Fallen Timber Road.  Our Land-Browning connection is through Eliza Land (believed to be sister of Thomas Land).  Eliza married Caleb Browning.  Rachel Blackaby's parents are Robert Blackaby (b. May 8, 1804) and Susan Jane Aldridge (Cherokee, found & adopted).  Evan Land had a son named William Thomas Land, Sr (born December 4, 1866 -July 17, 1947). William was a blacksmith in Henry County who married Sarah Catherine Harlow in 1892 (born July 27, 1872, d. 1956.).  They had a son named Joseph Evan Land (born November 2, 1908, d. March 19, 1978) who married Corine Elizabeth Stivers March 25, 1932. Corine was born 2/29/1908 and died at age 64 November 12, 1972.  Her parents were John Stivers (b. 1835 to age 81, d. December 15, 1916) who married Mary Kathryn Payton (1869 to age 75, d. January 19, 1945).  Joseph Evan Land and Corine Land had three sons & two daughters, Joseph Wesley Land, John William Land, Owen Leslie Land (died 5 mo's old),  Beulah F. Land & Kathryn Land.  Joseph Wesley Land married Linda Alice Downey.  Linda's parents were Lela Mae Fink (November 5, 1923, d. February 4, 1998) and Herbert Leonard Downey (June 14, 1918).  Linda and Joe Land had two daughters, Beth Marie Land & Melinda Jo Land raised in Henry County, Kentucky. Melinda has one daughter named Candace Ilene Wells, born in Jefferson County but lived in Eminence, KY.  Beth Marie Land married Rodney Dale Beck from North Carolina.  They have son named Gavin Thomas Beck, born in Frankfort, Kentucky but they all reside in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.  John William Land married Betty Ruble Land and had son named John Christopher Land and daughter Cindy Gail Land.  Beulah married Douglas Payton and have two daughters Elizabeth Lynn Payton and Tomi Payton.  Kathryn Payton married Herman Reynolds and have son John Michael. [*The parents of Prudence Watkins b. 1819 that married our Thomas Land are Evan Watkins Jr., b. 1/19/1772 at Watkins Ferry, Frederick Co. VA, d. 1819 and Rachel Rounder, b. 1775, d. 10/11/1819.  Both are buried in the Watkins Cemetery, Smithfield, Henry County.  Evan Watkins Jr. was the son of Evan Watkins Sr. b. 4/18/1744 VA, d. 1/17/1831 Henry Co, Ky. He married Prudence (whose family name is unknown/"Thressa" is listed in some records which may be her last name or a middle name she used quite frequently. Parents of Evan Watkins Sr. are Evan Watkins, b. 1710 Maryland, d. 1765.  He was married to Mary Catherine Webb, b. 1709 Uley, Gloucerershire, England.  Of interest is the fact that Evan Watkins was Maidstone on the Potomac's first owner in Virginia.  He established a ferry crossing at the property which was seized by confederate soldiers to cross into Virginia. Property is well preserved and intact today.  The Watkins cemetery is on Giltner Rd, Smithfield, Ky., Henry County.  It is 3 tenths of a mile after post office on left. There is a gravel drive up slope to brick house. Take left right next to house. There is a chain link fence around it.]
