Hattie Brannin Smith

Sunday morning, June 26th, about 11:00 a.m., at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Price Batts in the Mt. Gilead community, the sweet spirit of Mrs. Hattie Brannin Smith, wife of Mr. William Pryor Smith, withdrew from its frail tenement of clay and went to abide in the heavenly home with other saints made perfect on earth.

Only 47 years of age, with a devoted husband and two loving children to make life a pleasure, her passing seems one of the mysteries that are beyond ones power to fathom.  Her health had not been robust for many months but the end came as a great shock to her large circle of friends and relatives.  The ailment was of the heart, and her decline was so fast during the last few days that the husband had barely time to reach her bedside from his business in Tennessee, before the end.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Daniel P. and Sallie Brannin, both now deceased.  The surviving members of her own family are the husband, a daughter, Mrs. Price Batts and a son, William P. Smith, Jr., just entering upon manhood.  Then she leaves a sister: Mrs. George L. Pickett, Shelbyville; two brothers: James W. and John Brannin, of Cincinnati; and uncle: A. O. Brannin, New Castle.

The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., from the Methodist Church.  The sermon was by the pastor Rev. M. Combs.  Rev. R. K. Redwine, of the Baptist Church, read the Scriptures.

A large crowd followed the remains to the New Castle Cemetery.
