E. W. Bobbitt

There died last Saturday, May 6, about 5 oclock, one of the cleverest men in Henry County Mr. Elijah W. Bobbitt, whose home was in the outskirts of New Castle.  For some years he had suffered from a cancer on the left side of his face, and this caused his death.  It finally involved his eye, and a few weeks ago that organ was removed at his urgent request.   During all this time he was patient and uncomplaining.

Born in Boone County in August, 1839 he was approaching the end of his 72nd year.  In 1865 he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Ann Arnold of Franklin County.  Nine children were born to them, seven of whom are living; viz: J. W. Bobbitt, L. W. Bobbitt, Willis Bobbitt, Marion Bobbitt, Allie Bobbitt, Mrs. S. D. Carr and Mrs. Eliza Metcalfe.  A grandson, Eddie Bobbitt is also in the family, having been reared by the deceased.  All of these reside here save L. W. Bobbitt and Mrs. Metcalfe the Former at Frankfort, the latter at Fort Crook, Nebraska.  The wife survives with these children.

Mr. Bobbitt was a farmer, an industrious honest, courteous, kind and agreeable man, offending no one and attending strictly to his own affairs.  By far the greater part of his life was spent in this county, and no man ever spoke ill of him.  More than forty years ago he united with the Methodist Church and he remained in its membership the remainder of his days.

The funeral at the house, last Sunday at 2:30 p.m., was largely attended.  Rev. C. J. Nugent, of the Methodist Church preached an appropriate sermon.  There were some nice floral designs.  The remains were placed in New Castle Cemetery with every possible evidence of respect and affection.  His suffering over he rests in peace and in hallowed memory.

Mr. Bourne was born September first, 1862, at Christiansburg, Shelby County, Kentucky, but when a small boy moved with his parents, T. J. and Sally Pryor Bourne to Henry County where he spent his entire life and years of usefulness.  When yet in infancy, he sustained the loss of his mother  but was blessed with tender and faithful care of his fathers second wife, Bettie Beazley Bourne, to whom he showed throughout her whole life the devotion of a grateful and dutiful son.

On the twenty-fifth of May, 1904, he married Miss Ann Shanks, of Stanford, Kentucky, by which marriage he acquired connubial bliss with which few men are blessed and which continued through the remainder of his life.
