Court Order, Jan 13, 1834; Family Group Sheet, Thomas Ashby (1680-1752) ----------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by: Mary Yoder Date: Tuesday Sep 14, 1999 Also placed in the Mercer Co KyGenWeb Archives at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/mercer/misc/a2100001.txt ----------------------------------------------------------- Research Papers left for me at the LeRoy, McLean Co, IL Library by Chester Henry of LeRoy (retired State Policeman) of his Ashby Line: Research papers of Dr. F. Paul Schillig, 2240 Paloma Stree, Pasadena, Ca 91104. Dr Schilling and Mr Henry are connected to the Ashby, Conaway, Merrifield, Amos, Barnett lines from Bourbon, Mercer, Shelby, Nelson Cos, KY. Have more on the Conaway/Barnett line back to Pochantas (Virginia DARE) d/o John Daire and ? Whyte, dau of the 1st Gov of Va(? don't know if I remember right). This is the same line of my good email buddy Pam Mauer in Tx (we are working together on the Merrifield line). Much data for anyone who wants it. Stephen ASHBY (b 1710), s/o Thomas and Rose Ashby, was a captain in the Revolution in Woodford's Brigade in the Virginia Contiental Line, from which he retired on or about Sept. 14, 1778 at White Plains, New York, when the 15 regiments of the Va Contiental Line were consolidated into 11 regiments, retiring some 50 0r 60 senior officers as supermumeraries in order to allow active young officers to move up. Mr. S.H. Parker's letter of May 15, 1847 to Gilliam Gordian, ESq, datelined Richmond, refers to this consolidation at to "Capt. Stephen Ashby of Woodford's Brigade, who aged and infirmed elected to retire". (National Archives" Bounty Land Warrant Claim BLW &-2420-300_. Capt Stephen Ashby died in May of 1797 in what was then Christian Co, Ky, and probably in that part which is now Hopkins Co. However, at the time he was a citizen and resident of Mercer Co, KY, where his will was proved in July Court 1797 (Mercer Co Will Book 2, p 36). It names five sons and three daughters and mentions his wife , but not by name. Hopkins Co records show that seven of his children resided there (Order Book Aug 1831/Dec 1839). The only one who appears not to have lived there was daughter Letty Nealle. A document of April of 1834 mentioning heirs of Capt. Stephen Ashby names his grandchildren "except the children of Letty Neale".
