Thomasson Family

Louisa Co, Va to Hopkins Co, Ky

William Thomasson, born aboutt 1759, possibly in Hanover Co, Va, died about 1795 in Louisa Co, Va. [Will Dated Aug 7, 1793. Proved Dec 14, 1795, Louisa Co, Va. WB 1795, p 290, 293.]

He m/1 Elizabeth HALLOM. I have no further info on that marriage.

He married 18 Apr 1786, Louisa Co, Va, Unity Yancey HICKS/HIX. More on her line later.

William and Unity HICKS Thomasson were the parents of 4 children that I am aware of.

  • Unity Smith Thomasson
  • David Hicks Thomasson
  • Martha 'Patsy' Thomasson
  • Temperance Dumas Thomasson

Unity Smith Thomasson, b 22 Jun 1787, Louisa Co Va, d 13 Jun 1836, Hopkins [now Webster] Co, Ky, m 11 Feb 1809, Louisa Co Va, Dabney TRICE. In 1810, Dabney and his wife Unity came to what is now Webster Co Ky. On 3 Oct, 1810 a Smith Trice was named in Deed Book 1, p 110 Hopkins Co as witness to a deed from David Bullock to Unity Thomasson, 637 acres, military survey #2426, North fork of Tradewater River. Other witnesses were Dabney Trice and David H Thomasson. Part of this land remained in the Trice family until just a couple years ago when my widowed mother in law and her sister in law sold the last 40 acres that they owned jointly.

[I have no idea who Smith Trice was and have found no other references to him. I have no idea who he was named for although it must be a family name. I wonder if Unity Smith Thomasson Trice was named after him or if there might be another connection between the Trice and Thomasson families?]

William was the son of Samuel Thomasson Jr, [b 1722 Hanover Co Va, d 23 Oct 1793, Nicholas Co Ky], married between 1750 and 1752 Ann PAYNE. Their children were:

  • John, m 23 Dec 1780, Louisa Co Va, Frances COOK
  • Richard, b Scott Co Ky?, d 1802, m 25 Apr 1786 Louisa Co Sarah TERRY
  • Elias, m 28 Jul 1774 Louisa Co Va Mrs Mary HARRIS
  • Nathaniel, m 18 Dec 1773, Louisa Co Va Martha WOOD
  • Samuel (3) Jr, d West Union, Adams Co Oh; m 14 Dec 1783 Louisa Co Liddia McGEHEE. He was also married to a Catherine.
  • William [above],
  • Poindexter, b 1765, d 1833 Woodford Co Ky; m Sallie DUPUY.
  • Frances 'Fanny'
  • Nancy
  • Henrietta, m 6 Nov 1786 David SHELTON, s/o Peter Shelton and Frances NUCKOLS 'of Albemarle Co Va'
  • Mary, m 30 Mar 1789 Louisa Co Va, William DANIEL.
Samuel Jr. [b 1722 d 1793], was the son of Samuel Thomson and his wife Hannah GLASS Thomasson. Samuel was born 13 Dec 1691 in Va. and died 16 Jun 1753 in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co, Va. He married Hannah Glass sometime prior to 1722. Samuel Jr was the only issue of this marriage to my knowledge and I believe that Hannah died in 1722 as a result of this birth. Sometime between 1722 after the death of Hannah, and 1745, he married Mary McDONALD. She died about 1745. I don't show any children of this marriage. Sometime after 1746 Samuel married Temperance DUMAS. She was born abt 1711 [in Va?]. Temperance was the daughter of Jerome/Jeremiah DUMAS and his wife Unity LUCY Dumas. Jerome/Jeremiah was b 1681 in D'Antrangues, Province of Andeche, France and died about 1734 in Goochland Co, Va. He married Unity Lucy abt 1700.

Other children of Jerome and Unity were:

  • Mathen /Nathan, b 1703
  • Ester
  • Benjamin Sr, b abt 1705 in Va, d 1766 in Anson Co NC, m/1 Frances CLARK bef 1752 [she d 1752/53], m/2 Martha CULPEPER aft 1752 Jeremiah b abt 1707 in Va, d Hanover Co? Va
  • Sarah b 1709, m Benjamin HARRIS 17 Jun 1737.

Temperance DUMAS was married 3 times, and this is where things start getting interesting...

  • m/1 bef 1743 Robert YANCEY. He d bet 1743 and 1746 in Louisa Co, Va. I have not followed up on this to see what children they had if any.
  • m/2 Samuel Thomson, above, no issue.
  • m/3 aft 1753 Pewid HIX/HICKS. Their children:
    • David HICKS
    • Unity Yancey HICKS Thomasson, wife of William Thomasson.
If you are trying to follow this puzzle...

Temperance DUMAS was the m-i-l of William Thomasson. She was also the 3rd wife of Samuel Thomson [about 21 yrs older than she] and was therefore the step-grandmother of her s-i-l William Thomasson.

This is pretty much all I know on the Thomasson family and I have not personally verified all of the information above.
