There is in our family a handwritten pamphet by Rev Charles Holliday, who was a noted Methodist preacher in Ky. Ohio, and Illinois about a century ago. He was born in Baltimore, Md on Nov 23, 1771. Son of James Holliday and wife, Mary McAlister, daughter of Charles McAlister of Carrol's Tract, York Co. Pa.
Recently we secured a copy of the will of Charles McAlister, probated Jan 31, 1775 in which he mentions son-in-law James Holliday, wife Mary, and their child, Charles Holliday. So the two MSS are in accord. Now Rev. Charles Holliday was married May 2, 1793 to Sarah Watkins, born June 19, 1768, daughter of Beverly Watkins of North Carolina. She died June 30, 1816 and was buried at Bethel, Bath Co. Ky. She was the mother of 10 children, names and birthdays given in the pamplet. The 7th child was Sallie Watkins Holliday, born June 19, 1804 and married first to Cox, second to John Arnett Newland, March 27, 1820. Their oldest son was William McKendree Newland was my grandfather.
Found in the David Smith Library, Hindman Ky In 182? in Cin, Ohio Charles Holliday was given a 390,000 pounds or dollar budget for the printing of the Methodist, Newsletter for that year. This was found by David in the book of the History of Methodist church.

Who have died this year
Rev Charles Holliday died March 8, 1850, in his seventy-ninth year. He
was the son of James and Mary Holliday, and was born in the city of Baltimore,
Maryland, November 23, 1771. His parents were members of the Presbyterian
Church. They not only trained him up in its doctrines and moral discipline, but
his eduacation was conducted with special reference to his entering the ministry
in that Church. His parents dying while he was in his minority, he abandoned the
idea of entering the ministry, and turned his attention to secular pursuits. At
what age he became pious we have not specific information.
In the month of May, 1793, he was unitied in marriage to Miss Sarah
Watkins, a lady o good understanding, and sound and discreet judgement, who
afterward became a devoted, pious and faithful Christian. The day they were
married, they, in company, united with the Methodist Espicopal Church, and
commenced family devotions the same evening.
In 1797, he received license as a local preacher. His license was
regularly renewed, annually, from that time until September 20, 1809, at which
time he was admitted on trial, in the travelling connexion into the Western
Confernec, and appointed to the Danville Circuit. In October of the same year he
was ordained deacon by Bishop Asbury. In 1810 he was appointed to Lexington
circuit, where he remained two years and was ordained elder by Bishop M'Kendree,
October 11, 1811. In 1812, he was appointed to the Shelby circuit. In 1813 he
was appointed presiding elder of Salt River district, where he remained three
years. In July, 1816, being bereaved of his pious and faithful wife by death,
who left him with nine children, he found it necessary to locate. The
certificate of his location is dated september 7, 1816, signed by Bishop
M'Kendree.
In the former part of the year 1817, he entered into a second marriage
with Miss Elizabeth Spears. This lady, who still lives, proved to be a decoted
wife, and a kind mother, and faithful guardian to his children. His family being
now provided for, he was readmitted into the traveling work in 1817, and
appointed to the Cumberland District, Tennessee Conference, where he remained
four years. From 1821 to 1825, he laboured as presiding Elder on the Green River
district, Kentucky Conference. In the fall of 1825, he took a transfer to the
Illinois Conference, and was appointed to the Wabash district, where he
continued to labour till the meeting of the General Conference of 1828, at which
time he received the appointment of Book-Agent at Cincinnati, in which he
continued eight years. At the close of his term of service as book-agent, he was
transferred to the Illinois Conference, and in 1836 was appointed presidng elder
of the Lebanon district, where he continued two years. He was appointed
presiding elder on the Alton district in 1838, which was the last district on
which he laboured. He continued in an effective relation to the conference,
filling such small appointments and doing such work as his declining strength
would permit, until 1846, when he was granted a superannuation. In this relatin
he remained unti the close of his useful life. He attended the Conference in
Quincy in September, 1849. On his way to that conference he was attacked with
disease of the kidneys, from which he never recovered. Although his sufferings
in this, his last illness, were extreme, he frequently exulted in the grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ, which enabled him to bear so much suffering without
complainng. he retained his reason to the last. It had been his practice for
thirty years to pray three times a day in his family, and from devotional spirit
we wonder not hat his sun of life set in great peace. In summing up the
character of our lamented Brother Holliday, we may say, that there are few
traits of real excellence that he did not prossess in an eminent degree. As a
preacher he was clear, sound, and pactical. When he indulged in doctrinal
controversy, although he was decided, he expressed his views in strong language,
he was always kind and loving to the person of an opponent. In all the relations
of life, as a husband, a father, a pastor, a friend, a companion, he was a most
lovely and interesting man, and in the sufferings and disappointments of life
his conduct was characterized by that "charity which suffereth long and is
king."

20. WILLIAM HOLLIDAY. APPARENTLY DIED YOUNG.
But a William Holliday is listed in 1810 Russel Co. Va tax list as one white male with one horse---Phyllis Griffith ----Could he be Rev Charles Holliday brother, No one knows for sure he did die. What if he never brought land, or was in court, he would be hard to track. Maybe he was wondering around living on the land and moving often. This William is a good hot suspect for being my William and needs to be investigated very thoroughly. Maybe he went to the mountains of Ky and they never heard from him again and assumed he died. --Sources Birth: SUZANNE MURRAY, FIDONET
