Perry County, Kentucky Holliday family

JOHN H. D. HOLLIDAY
son of William Holliday of 1820 Floyd Census

John H. D. Holliday, forefather of all Perry Co. Holliday's, came to Perry Co. Ky. in 1823 Proof of this can be found on the 1823 Perry Co. tax list. He formerly lived in Floyd County on Right Beaver Creek. John H. D. married Allie Justice in 1821 in Floyd County. In John's Marriage bond, he stated he was from the same county and in his permission Slip his Dad's name was William Holliday. We have never learned his mothers name yet. Proof that he lived on Right Beaver is in a Ky. Land Grant. In the property descriptions of this Land Grant it mentions "to a point just behind John Holliday's house".

In the 1850 Perry Co. Census John was listed as being born in Virginia and his wife Allie Justice as being born in N. C.but in another Census she was listed as being born in Ga. John was probably born in Russell Co. Va. about the year 1800 as the census says.

In 1822 John Holliday was ordered to view and mark a road to Caney. This Caney is about 10 miles from Puncheon Camp Creek. Later in Perry Co. he was ordered to mark a road from Troublesome Creek to Hazard.

Although John was one of nine sons and 2 daughters of William (of the 1820 Floyd Co. Census) he is the only one we can prove is a child of William, although we feel strongly that the Samuel that settled in Morgan County and the William that married in Perry County in 1824 are children of William .

John was a witness to all his dad's deeds, signing both his name and it appears his dad's name with a x after his dad's name. Although his dad could not write this gives evidence that John had formal schooling in Virginia before his dad moved to Ky.

John's son's and daughters are well documented in census records, marriage records, deeds, etc. He lost his son John at the age of 13, and he had a daughter Raney to die young also. He had a son, Green who died while serving in the 14th Ky Cav. Co L Union in the Civil War. It is said that John at one time owned land from the mouth of Ball creek all the way to Rowdy (formally Stacy) Ky. I know he was taxed at one time for 5,000 acres of land so this should be true. In the late 1840"s he started deeding land to his kids. I found one child, Amy, age 22 in the 1850 census listed as being born in Va. Amy is officially noted as being born in 1830, so John and Allied may have about that time returned to Virginia before coming back to Kentucky but was not listed in any tax records found yet. I would like to know where in Virginia they went to. There may be a birth record of Amy there if we can find it. John's death is as much a mystery as his birth, no one knows the exact date. but John was supposed to have died around 1878. It is said that he was Judge of Perry County around 1878 or 80 with his term being cut short for some reason, possibly his death. His birth would be around the year 1800 depending on which census you looked at. Allie was always listed as being older than he was.

He is buried in Holliday Cemetery at Ary, Ky. His grave and that of his wife is in a house. . Someone has put bronze Plaques on this house but without any dates.

John and Allies children were:

  1. 1. Tolbert that married Rachel Napier, daughter of Mccager Napier and Leanner Lewis
  2. 2. William that married 1. Polly Smith 2 Margaret(Peggy) Sizemore Conway
  3. 3. Polly that married Steven Napier, brother of Rachel
  4. 4. Jemima "Amy" that married Joshua Smith--son of Richard Smith that married Alecia Combs.
  5. 5. Prudy that married Larklin Davis --Larkin disappeared in Civil War
  6. 6. Raney that married Frank Combs but died 4 years later
  7. 7. Green Holliday that married Jemima Maggard--died in Civil War-- buried in Cin., Ohio
  8. 8. Sally Holliday that married Dr. John D. Campbell
  9. 9. John Holliday that died in 1853 age 13 to fever;
  10. 10. Walter Holliday married Louise Noble

It has been proven by Samuel L. Hollidays death certificate in 1923 and by his second mariage record in 1917 that he was the son of John Holliday and Catherine Tyra:

The children by Catherine Tyree are listed below:

  1. 11. Samuel Holliday --known as Long Sam
  2. 12. Nancy Ann Holliday ---married W. W. Bolen of Rock Fork, Ky in Floyd Co.
  3. 13. Elizabeth or Betty-- last in household of a Combs in 1880 Perry Census

They have went by the name of Tyree, Holliday, or Walker as Catherine married Jesse Walker later but we know that Samuel went by the name of Holliday. John H. D. is supposed to have built a house for them just across the ridge from his house and a road in that area in now named Katie Tyree drive.

Alley was the daughter of John Justice and Amy Neal (Conflict on Parents). She had several brothers and sisters. Two of her brothers as well as her dad served in the Rev. War. One brother Simeon helped start lots of churches in this area. One of them was Indian Bottom at Blackey. He may have helped start the one at Ary but I have no proof. Simeon was a big fellow. The special chair made for him is used as a love seat today. A picture of her hangs on the wall of the little church at Holliday Cemetery. A woman at Dwarf has her churn that is said to have been brought from Georgia with her family and is over 200 years old. This same woman has her quilt that was finished just days before her death. I have Videos of both. I believe that the Justice family lived for a time in Russell Co. Va area and that they never came to Floyd until just before 1820 as they are listed in the tax records there.

Katie Tyree, we do not know much about . Some researchers say she came from Louisville, some from Amherust Co. Va.but I believe Ousley or Breathitt Co. Ky . We just recently found her tomb in Chaffins Cemetery on Rock Fork in Knott Co. Ky. Headstone was found buried 3 inches under the dirt and had birth date of 1825 and death date of 190? as the corner was broken off by a lawn mower.
