Samuel Holliday of Morgan County, Kentucky

1. SAMUEL HOLLIDAY was born about 1810 in Indiana if the death certificate of his sons William and Jillson are correct

He was opposed to Slavery, so he became involved in the Underground Railroad and while escorting a group of slaves trying to escape to freedom, he met with foul play and never returned. This happened sometime in the 1840"s as in the 1850 Morgan Census Martha E Holliday was listed as a widow with her six children. The source for this information are:Birth: CHARLEY HOLLIDAY, MORGAN CO. WHITE OAK, & FRANCES HOLLIDAY and LEANDER'S FAMILY BIBLE, & MRS. FARMER HOLLIDAY

He married MARTHA ELIZABETH WHITLEY, daughter of ALEXANDER WHITLEY & ELIZABETH EASTERLING WHITLEY, on 22 Feb. 1832 in MORGAN COUNTY, KY. She was born in 1815. and died sometime after 1860. as she was listed in the 1860 census. Her exact birth and death dates are unknown to me now. Her Family was from Russell County, Va. and that is probably where Samuel got to know her.

Notes: The Ky Land Grants under Ky Land Warrants list the following Land Grants for S HOLLIDAY, 50 Acres Book F-2 P 425 1/9/1833 Morgan Co on a Branch of White Oak

ALLIE JUSTICE, wife of JOHN H D HOLLIDAY died in Morgan Co. while living with her son WALTER HOLLIDAY, who had moved to Morgan Co. Ky sometime after 1880. She died on Christmas Day in 1893 while visiting WILLIAM HOLLIDAY, a son of this SAMUEL HOLLIDAY and who is also the Grandfather of CHARLEY HOLLIDAY, who presently lives on White Oak..-CHARLEY HOLLIDAY,

Samuel had a Land Patent in Morgan Co. on the left hand fork of White Oak Creek, which is now in Magoffin Co. as the county lines is the ridge between the two forks. His land is across the ridge and gap in the hollow across right hand fork of White Oak from where CHARLEY HOLLIDAY now lives, or the next hollow on the left after passing the HOLLIDAY CEMETERY at HOLLIDAY, KY on ROUTE 1000 on WHITE OAK. The land patent is on the left fork of White Oak, at or Near Harper, KY.

SAMUEL has not been proven to be a brother of John H. D. Holliday of Perry Co. Ky but evidence points that way. The Holliday legend of White Oak says he is a brother of John and a bond existed between them and the Perry Co. Hollidays as lots of the related families married back and forth between the two counties and neighbors of these families. William, son of Samuel and grandfather of Charley always referred to Allie, when she lived on Caney as "Aunt Allie" and his son Samuel M., father of Charley referred to her as "Aunt " . Also a Samuel Holliday was listed in the 1840 Breathitt Co. Ky census. His neighbors were William Strong on one side and three Miller families on the other side of him. The Strong family lived near the mouth of Lost Creek and Troublesome Creek . The Millers lived a little closer to Jackson with some of them living on Buckhorn. It is my opinion that this Samuel Holliday lived on White Oak but was caught by the census taker with his family on the way to or from visiting his brother John on Troublesome Creek. .

A John Holliday in 1840 Tax list for Breathitt County.

Mrs. FARMER HOLLIDAY, ROYALTON, KY in a letter says "WILLIAM & his son SAMUEL came from Va. and settled in Ky. SAMUEL married in Morgan Co." and we have found the marriage record to prove this. After his disappearance, the three sons took care of the family with William, in charge. Jillson bought land in Magoffin Co. just across the hill from the Old Holliday School, which has recently fallen down. William , Jillson and Alexander moved to the Ashland-Greenup Area sometime and while there Alexander died at the age of 21 and is buried there somewhere unknown to us.. They were engaged in in business with William, probably showboat business maybe in Boyd Co or Greenup Co. Ky. After coming back from the Ashland Area, Jillson raised his family and was a farmer on the land he had purchased and he died there and is buried in the Allen Cemetery at Harper, KY. Mary, twin of Elizabeth went to Greenup with her brothers. While staying with a man and wife he got her pregnant and she had one child who went by the name Leander Holliday. The 1860 census lists he was born in Va in 1858. Elizabeth, twin of Mary was born in 1840, She married James Henry Dixon. I have a letter she wrote or had written for her by her daughter in 1911. Her daughter signed her name Martha Castle. She lived at Sika, in Johnson Co. Ky on route 201. She is probably buried near Sika. We know she had one daughter, Martha Castle and we found another in the birth records named Lily. We may have some more cousins in this area that we have not yet located. Ellen married a Clemons and they lived in the Ashland, Ky, Ironton, Ohio area. I've hear my dad say they had two sons, Alfred and Irvin. I never heard him mention any more children that they may have had.----Charley Holliday

They had the following children:

  1. .2 WILLIAM HOLLIDAY
  2. 3. ALEXANDER HOLLIDAY
  3. 4. JILLSON HOLLIDAY
  4. 5. ELLEN HOLLIDAY
  5. 6v. ELIZABETH HOLLIDAY
  6. 7i. MARY HOLLIDAY

2. WILLIAM HOLLIDAY. was born 16 June 1833 in MORGAN CO, KY. and died 17 Jan 1922 and is buried in the HOLLIDAY CEM, HOLLIDAY, KY, MORGAN CO. --The source for this information is: : CEM HEADSTONE IN HOLLIDAY, KY & KY DEATH RECORDS 28289 VOL. 57

He first married EMILY GULLETT. sometime in the 1860's. Her birth and death date unknown to me now. She was the daughter of Charles and Mary Gullett of Greenup Co. Ky and is buried in a old graveyard above Gullett Cemetery on White Oak in Morgan County, Ky.

William served in the Civi War in the State Militia in Ashland, Ky area. Notes: William owned a showboat at one time according to family legend and as Charley's dad told him as a boy. When Charley does not know but see the story Charley wrote for the Morgan County paper for a estimated date and more details. Charley said it was probably a steamboat and where he got it Charley does not know for sure but believes his Grandfather William gave it to him. But he lost it one night while drinking heavily as he liked to drank his Whisky. He also got a tax license from the government to produce Whisky at one time as Charley has the receipt for the license. According to legend a group of gamblers got him into a card game and took everything he had including his boat except he had enough hid back that he came back to the Right Fork of White Oak and bought a farm. Charley and others live there today. William had what was called Magic Hands. He gave puppet shows on his boat and performed other magic tricks. Charley recalls of his dad while young, telling about going with him to GREENUP, KY and giving these shows. William lived in a log cabin that used to be behind the house at the foot of the hill at the entrance to the HOLLIDAY, CEM at HOLLIDAY, KY, on Route 1000, Right Fork of White Oak. The chimney still stands and part of the cabin is still there. The house in front was built and belonged to HARRISON HOLLIDAY, who was a school teacher and also ran a store and post office at Holliday, Ky. One of William's son SAMUEL M HOLLIDAY, built a Cabin on up in the hollow. I have some of it on Video Tape from the air and ground. Part of the old house and cabin is still standing and the barn is on the right side of the Road. I have it also on video tape but did not know who lived there at the time. The house built by Harrison still has furniture, etc. inside. Charley and I looked it over for William's family bible but never found it. We would like to find this bible because Charley remembers seeing it and it having the names of the parents and grandparents of William. Charley thinks that Harrison loaned it to someone before he died. If you have this bible or know anyone that does, all we want is the names and information in it and you can send copies of these pages to me or to Charley on White Oak, not giving your name if you do not want to. But we would like to know who has it for further research etc. just in case we need it again. Charley also would like to locate the puppets that Willaim owned also. The last he knew of them, they were in the Log Cabin. William was born and raised on the left fork of White Oak in what is now Magoffin Co. Ky.

If Samuel, father of this William was born in Indiana, I would like to know where. This puts a new perspective on things. Of course in 1800, Ind. would have been a part of Va. so born in Va, may be Indiana later on. This would be reverse migration. What made Samuel return to Ky after growing up. Who did he known in Morgan Co. that caused him to return to Ky and marry Martha Whitley in 1832. Who was William's dad? We know his name to be Samuel but did he live in Ind. before coming to Morgan Co. and where did he come from. How old was he. Lots of questions. See Jillson, another son of Samuel.

The sources of this information is:Birth: LEANDER'S FAMILY BIBLE & 1920 CENSUS and Charley Holliday and birth records in Vital records.

Elizabeth and James Dixon had the following children: There may have been more but I found this one listed in the birth records.

  1. 23 i. LILLY R. DIXON

7. MARY HOLLIDAY. was sometimes called Polly and was born about 1843 in MORGAN CO, KY. Her death date and place of burial are unknown to us now.

--The source for this information is listed below: Birth: LEANDER'S FAMILY BIBLE, Charley Holliday, Mrs. Farmer Holliday, Flora Holliday and others

She is listed as Mary in the 1850 Federal Census but the family always knew her name as Polly and she was a twin to Elizabeth that married JAMES H. DIXON. POLLY never was married that we know of but family legend says that while her family was living in Greenup, Ky, she was staying with a man and wife and he seduced her and she got pregnant. Some other versions of this legend says she was mistreated by him or raped by him but anyway she got pregnant somehow and LEANDER HOLLIDAY was born. Some versions of this legend say she ran from him and hide. Some versions has it that she went to her grandfather's house or others of kin in West Va. but Va at that time to hide from him. The census records has him born about 1859 in Ky but some says he was actually born in West Virginia. Charley does not know the names of the couple she was staying with in Greenup but Mrs. Farmer Holliday and Flora Hollidays said his first name was Jack. Luther Holliday, who was a neighbor of mine and a son of Leander told his children that they were really Weddingtons instead of Holliday's so I am guessing that this man's name may be Jack Weddington or something similar. Carolyn Dion, who is tracing Katie Tyree that lived in the household of John H. D. Holliday on Troublesome and later went to Morgan Co. and stayed with some people there, found a descendant of Leander that lived in Ohio, of which he said the man's name was Wilmington. LEANDER and POLLY was still with the family of MARTHA E. as the 1860 Census list her and LEANDER who was 1 Year old. In the 1870 census LEANDER was listed as a child of JILLSON so he must have been staying with JILLSON HOLLIDAY. All LEANDER'S children's sources are from census records and Mrs. Farmer Holliday, RT. 77, BOX 200, ROYALTON, KY 41464. Charley has him listed as born in Va in this Census but in 1900 Census he is listed as being born in Ky., so I will just say Ky or Va. yet to be proven. Polly has been described by some as "not being like the rest of them" which leads me to believe she may have been suffering from Mental Illness of some unknown type but may have been just shy. I do not have her death date nor anymore information on her. I would like to know if she ever married, death date and where she is buried. See Leander Holliday for more information on him and her. She never did marry that we know of but did have a child by JACK WEDDINGTON or Wilmington (see story above). whose birth, death and other information in unknown to us

Mary had the following child and no others that we know of now:

24 i. LEANDER HOLLIDAY
