William and Nancy Holliday/Holladay

Most of this is the result of research by June and Audine Ridge Miller, many times the sources lists a census etc, but it was they who found them in the census records. I list the census as a source as it is the main source and will be better accepted by another researcher.

1. WILLIAM HOLLADAY. was born about 1775 in Bedford County, Va.. and died sometime after 1848 in KY, W VA, or IND. I believe him to be the son of David and Agnes Pulliman Holladay of Smith Co. Tenn. and grand son of William H. and Judy Holladay. William H Holladay was a son of John "The Ranger" Holliday or some may know him as John Marshall Holladay. I believe him to be the same William Holladay that was in the Smith Co. Tenn. and also the same one on page 227 of the "The Holladay Family" by A. M. Holladay, but this has yet to be proven but the following evidance suggests it

  1. 1. Two of his children George and Nancy was born in Tenn as shown by Indiana Census records,.
  2. 2. He was not picking up his mail in Smith Co. Tenn during th same years William and Nancy was in Ky as Tenn. newspaper articles show. A 1827 land grand in Tenn. soon after William and Nancy left Ky.
  3. 3. Names of his children suggest it..
  4. 4. The William Holiday that was in Smith Co. Tenn had a brother (Samuel) that went to Highland Co, Ohio and the Deeds of William and Nancy Holliday shows a Highland Co. Ohio connection. Also some of the Canterburys that was neighbors was from Tenn.
  5. 5. The William Holliday in Smith Co. had a brother named Samuel that went to Highland, Ohio and in the 1810 Greenup Co. Ky Census is a Samuel Holiday and he was living in the Bear Creek area with two families living in the same household as indicted by the census. I think the second family may have been the family of William and Nancy. Tax records of Greenup Co. Ky if available will be looked at in the near future to confirm this.

William took up Land Grand and purchased property in Lawrence. Co. Ky in 1826 on Bear Creek. This Creek emptys into the Big Sandy River between Lousia and Cattlesburg, Ky and almost on the Boyd Co. and Lawrence Co. Ky boundary line. Evidance shows they lived here as early as 1810 and left sometime around 1826 after securing deeds etc to their land holdings and then selling it all and leaving. We don't kinow where they went to.

William came to Va and lived in Smith Co. Tenn and then after selling his property to Willeray Pate as mentioned on Page 227 of "The Holladay Family" by Alvis Milton Holladay, he moved to Lawrence Co. Ky and lived there until 1826. when he may have moved back to Smith Co. Tenn or went to Ind. or Mo. or parts unknown to me.

The following information from the book "The James Steward Family of Early Augusta County, Va and Descendents 1740-1916" by Florences S. Dickerson.

On page 70. it says Polly Holliday was a sister to William Holliday and Polly Married William Steward on May 27, 1828 (Vol 1, 89, Page 190) and they had a son, John who married Dorothy Richardson on 8/22/1859 in Lawrence Co. Ky (Bk 2, Page 122)

Page 70 also names John Ridge (husband to Nancy Holladay ) in Nov 1848 in a chancery suit of absolum Stewart, son of Charles (nephew of Absolum) and against above grantees. Wm Holladay was named and him and his wife Nancy signed the above deed. Wm Holladay was a brother to Polly Holladay who married a son of James Stewart, a brother of Absolum.

Tax List

I have not been able to check any Greenup, Ky tax list but have checked the Lawrence Co. tax list from since it was formed from Greenup in 1822. I believe we will find William arriving in Greenup Co. Ky about 1809.
William was listed in the 1822 Lawrence co.Ky tax list as having 2 children in school district 1, 126 acreas of land valued at $252, 1 of something valued at $123 for a total worth of $377.00 In the 1823 tax list 130 acreas of land worth $300.00, 3 of something, worth $150 for a total worth of $450. and in the 1824 tax list 130 acres of land on Big Sandy River watercouse from Capt Savage and Company land survey with one white male and 2 white females in household and a total worth of $300.00 He was listed in 1825 tax list also along with George and in 1826 none was listed in Lawrence Co. and never again in tax list but we stopped checking in the 30's. We know George went to Owen Co. Ind but where William and Nancy moved to is still a Mystery to us. But they were still around as they later deeded land to their son in law, Robert Hazelet and in 1848 was named in a law suit.
John Ridge, William Holliday, Amos Stewart, was in Bourban Co. Kan in 1857. John Ridge died in Marshall Co. Kansas in 1860 while living with a grandson. In 1848, Absolam Stuart, son of Charles Stuart, brought suit against his cousins, William Holliday and wife Nancy, Andrew Stuart, John Ridge, Mary Jane Stuart, Amelia A. Stuart and Henry R. Stuart. concerning land granted to Andrew in 1823. Amelia and Henry was age 5 & 7 at the time. Andrew Stuart b 1791-1792 was granted three 50 acres tracts on Bear Creek Lawrence C., Ky which he sold betweeen 1825 & 1838 to John Ridge, Richard Evans. and Harvey Stuart. (Geneologies of Ky Families Ky Historical Society Register pg 347)

Where did Willam and Nancy go after leaving Lawrence.

William was not in any Smith Co. Tenn census of 1820 or 1830 or later. He also was not picking up his mail in Smith Co., Tenn as his name was in almost every list of people that had not picked up their mail from Smith Co. Tenn in 1822 from the Tenn. Newpaper abstracts. He did apply for a Land Grant in 1827 in Smith County , Tenn. Two years after leaving Ky. Just about right. He had to improve the land for two years before he could apply. Most of the time they get these land grants when they start selling to leave and go somewhere else as they had to live and improve it first.

He married NANCY , her maiden name unknown to us now in VA OR TENN. She was born About 1770 in VA. and died sometime after 1848 in KY , W VA, OR IND. I believe her to the the Ann Wells that married a William Holliday in Whyte Co. Va in 1793. Nancy Ann is a name common in many households during this time in history. They had the following children:

  1. 2 i. Margaret Holliday
  2. 3 ii. Nancy Holliday
  3. 4 iii. Polly Holliday
  4. 5 iv. William H. Holliday

3. Nancy Holliday. was born about 1804 in Smith Co. TENN. and died 22 Apr 1863 in Worth Co. Mo..

In 1820 Census, she was 16 years of age and living with her parents in Greenup, Ky, Two brothers, William age 26 and David age 18 were also at Home. When she married she was 18 years of age and John Ridge was 21. They were married in Lousia, Lawrence County, Ky at the Christian Church by the minister, R. O. Bussy, They had first three sons, Martin, William, and Fleming, while living in Ky. as per 1830 Census. Before 1830 Census, they moved t o Cabell County in West Virginia, or the Census taker overstepped the W V, Ky border as some say they did in those early Census sometimes by as much as 5 miles.
Nancy and Husband were early settler in Owen County, Indiana, securing their land in Jefferson Twp before 1830. John Ridge helped survey and lay out the town Lots. Her brother William and nephew David also were early settlers there. While living in Jefferston Twp, she and John had four more sons, Thompson Lin, John, Francis M. and Howard Rice. as per 1850 Owen County Census. Between 1853 and 1858 John Ridge and wife Nancy and 7 of their sons moved to Gentry Co. Mo. James, one of their sons died in Oct 1860 of Kidney Disease. He was 29 years of age, this taken from Mortality Schedule 1860 Gentry Co;. Mo page 169). In the same year John Ridge died from Chills, He was 59 years old. ( Mortality above also) Nancy Holliday moved to Worth Co. Mo. where she died April 22, 1863. She was 58 years of age. (Worth Co. Mo. Wills and Bonds & Admrs. Probate Index. Book2, p 14. 4. POLLY HOLLIDAY. was born about 1805. Died date and place unknown to us.

Her marriage records is also in Book "PIONEER FAMILIES OF EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN KY" see William Stewart for more information. If you go to Lawrence County Courthouse, you will only find her listed in marriage index. no marriage record in book but it is supposly on microfilm but I looked on film and never found her. Another book has her listed as a Sister to William Holliday. This would account for the extra daughter of William and Nancy Holliday, as they only had two daugters in the 1820 Greenup census but three daughters married in Lawrence Co. Another puzzle is that William and Nancy and family was last in tax list in 1826 but Polly returns to marry in 1828.

She married WILLIAM STEWART, 28 May 1828 in LAWRENCE CO, KY. He was born 1806 in GILES CO. VA. and died somewhere in Texas, date and place unknown to us.

William Steward was born in Giles Co. Va but was raised in Greenup, Ky. After his marriage to POLLY HOLLIDAY, they moved to TEXAS where Polly died, date and place unknown to us . WILLIAM Steward remarried to a wife whose name we do not know. WILLIAM Steward and one of his wives had a son, JOHN STEWARD, born MAY 22, 1859 and either JOHN or his son became a Doctor.

They may be correct as 3 Holliday females married in Lawrence but William only had two females in his Household leaving one extra females we could not account for who she was the daughter of. Polly also could be one of the two daughters of William Holliday that was living on Right Beaver in Floyd County from 1816 to 1824. --Sources Death: David Smith Library&Knott County Historical Soc, KY

They had the following known children:

  1. 24 i. JOHN STEWARD

5. William H. Holliday. was born about 1810. We are not sure he was a son of William and Nancy but we know they had a son William that left Lawrence Co. Ky and was a early settler in Owen, Co. Ind according to the Owen Co. Indiana history books. We know no more of them in Owen County, Ind and feel this may be them returned to Lawrence Co. by 1850. In 1850 they lived in Lockwood, which is just a mile up the road from Bear Creek and for them to be in Lawrence Co. instead of Boyd would mean they would have had to live very near the mouth of Bear Creek .
