Alice Lloyd College

Description: Renowned mountain school located eight miles east. Alice Lloyd came from Boston, 1916, dedicating her life to education of youth in area. The Caney Creek Community Center was organized, 1917, and Caney Junior College, 1923. After her death, 1962, college renamed honoring founder, who inspired graduates to serve this region. It is supported by friends throughout U.S.


Carr Creek Center

Location: 9 mi. S. of Hindman, KY 160

Description: Olive V. Marsh and Ruth E. Watson, from Mass., aided by the Daughters of the American Revolution, carved this center of learning out of a wooded hillside overlooking rustic "Singing Carr." When organized, September 1, 1920, it was dedicated to the education of mountain youth and is maintained by the contributions of many friends and the Knott Co. Board of Education.


Cordia School

Description: Lotts Creek Community School was founded by Alice Slone from Caney Creek, 1933. Sent to Cleveland, Ohio, by Alice Lloyd for education; returned home to teach. A year later she started the Cordia High School, uniting the people for a common goal-education. Includes all 12 grades; average 200 pupils. Supported by gifts and volunteers as well as by Knott County.

Description: For J. Proctor Knott during term as Governor of Kentucky, 1883-87. Knott was born Marion Co., Ky., 1830. Missouri Legislature, 1851-59. Atty. Gen., 1859-60. Returned Ky., 1863. U.S. Congress six terms. Famous as humorous and satirical orator. In the 1891 Const. Conv. took lead in keeping capital at Frankfort. First Law Dean, Centre College, 1891-1901. Died in 1911.

Folk Music Scholar

Description: Dr. Josiah H. Combs, born in Hazard, 1886, lived here from 1893-1920s. He distinguished himself as an educator and collector of American folk music. Began his study of folklore at Hindman Settlement School; one of two students in first graduating class, 1904. Combs collected mountain ballads and gave recitals from New York to Texas with his three-string dulcimer.

(Reverse) Dr. Josiah H. Combs, 1886-1960 - Dr. Combs received Ph.D. degree from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1925. Married Charlotte Benard of France. He was a professor of foreign languages in many universities and a pioneer in research and the preservation of folklore, folk songs, and U.S. dialects. Combs had great affection for his fellow mountaineers. His father, John W. Combs, was state senator, 1904-06.

Description: Built for Alice Geddes Lloyd by Caney Creek residents to educate their children. Mrs. Lloyd worked to educate leaders for service to the people of this area. Friends helped, and through Mrs. Lloyd's leadership, the Caney Creek Community Center, Alice Lloyd College and over 100 schools in Eastern Kentucky were formed. Presented by East Kentucky Health Services Center.

Hindman Settlement School

Description: Founded 1902 by May Stone and Katherine Pettit to provide an educational opportunity for the youth of the mountains and keep them mindful of their heritage.


Morgan's Last Raid
(Marker Number: 624)

Description: On tragic last Kentucky raid, CSA Gen. John H. Morgan and Raiders entered state June 1, 1864. Moved through here. Took Mt. Sterling June 8, lost it on 9th, then took Lexington on l0th, and Cynthiana on the 11th. Next day USA under General S. G. Burbridge defeated CSA. Morgan retreated, reaching Virginia June 20. See map other side. Raiders never recovered from this reverse.

Pioneer Educator

Description: In 1889, George Clarke came to Hindman, licensed to practice law. Seeing the need of education, Clarke established a subscription school with the help of the students and citizens. Educator, State School Inspector, member State Board of Examiners. Died, 1940. His epitaph reads: "Let God be praised and let Eastern Kentucky rejoice that so great a man once graced its soil."
