It appears that Clerk Fork was in existance prior to the beginning of these minutes in 1802. It was also known as Stockton Valley#2 and at various times was a member of the Green River, Stockton Valley & Russel Creek Association. Isaac DENTON was pastor here at one time. This church is in Clinton Co but was formerly in Cumberland Co thus will contain many Cumberland Co names. Names will be shown as spelled and the clerk wasn't the greatest speller! May 1802: Isaac DENTON chosen moderator. Received Tomes & Polley WALKER by experience. William WOOD chosen to write a letter to the Green River Association, to apply for membership. There is some information on this church in "A History of Kentucky Baptists, From 1769 to 1885", by J. H. Spencer, 1886. I will include a section at the end of this note. It says that the church was constituted on April 1, 1802 by Reverend Isaac Denton and others. In one of his articles in "Cumberland County Kentucky - Yesterday and Today" Dr. Winston W Crouch says the same thing. There has been some confusion in the past about Reverend Isaac Denton because there were two of them in the area. The Dentons of Monroe Co and Clay Co (TN) descend from Abraham Denton and Mourning Hogg, who came to the area around 1800 and were early members of the Mill Creek Church. Their son Isaac (born 1774) settled around Brimstone Creek in Clay(Jackson) County and became well-known for his preaching. He is said to have still been preaching as he approached the age of 100. The Revernd Isaac Denton of the Clear Fork Baptist Church was a cousin of the other Rev Denton. His parents were Isaac (brother of Abraham) and Ann Whitson Denton.
