Dwarf.Baptist-Perry.Co.1900.CHURCH Dwarf Baptist Church 1900 Perry Co. From "Perry County Kentucky- A History" by the Hazard Chapter of the D.A.R., PG 142. DWARF BAPTIST CHURCH REV. A.S. PETREY held a revival meeting at Dwarf in the summer of 1900. Evening services were held in the school house and Richard Gayheart arranged seats in his orchard where services were held in the morning while school was in session. As a result of this meeting the Dwarf Baptist Church was organized. Permission was granted by the First Baptist Church of Hazard, for REV. PETREY, their pastor, to fill the pulpit of Dwarf one Sunday each month. Some of the early members were MR. AND MRS. SILAS RITCHIE, ELBERT OWENS, RACHEL OWENS BRASHEAR, DR. S.M. RITCHIE, NANNIE RITCHIE, AND FLORA OWENS. Two Ministers came out of this church, SILAS B. RITCHIE, who succeeded REV. A.S. PETREY, served as Pastor until his death and HENRY C. COMBS who later served the First Baptist Church of Hazard for 2 years. In 1923 or 1924 the Church building was destroyed by fire. Many of the members had moved away and there was no money to rebuild. The lot was deeded to Dwarf graded school with the privilege of worshipping in the new school building. In 1942 ROBERT AND SEBA SLOANE donated one-quarter acre of ground to the Dwarf Church and plans for building a new church were begun. The congregation moved to CHESTER GAYHEART'S store building where services were held until they moved into the new brick church on Highway 15. (Robert Slone.)
