L. & B. S Railway providing they establish a station there and name it for him. This was done. A post office was established later and called "Crooks" in honor of the Crooks family, long prominent in that section. This was later changed to Preston. With the establishment of the station, a large crew was employed and a two-story house built which was used as an Inn. At one time the population was around 250. Preston was the point of delivery for Owingsville and all freight was brough by wagon to and from Owingsville. There was a stage coach line thet carried passengers and express. They were located where the Western Auto Store is now, being hauled there over mud roads by mule teams. The depot employed a general agent and telegraph operator. Some who worked there were Arnold E Swartz, Walter J Bailey and Floyd Bailey. There were several stores and a tomato cannery which operated for two seasons. In 1915, school was taught by Miss Pearl Staton. Captain William Penrose Conner was born there August 24, 1828. He served three terms as Sheriff of Bath County and enlisted for service in the Mexican War and was named Captain in the Confederate Army. Later returning to Bath County, he was Circuit Cleark from 1873 to 1903, a period of 29 years.
