The custom became so popular during the Great Depression that the manufactures of flour sacks began to print colorful flowers and other designs on the cloth that they used. When a family was purchasing a sack of cow feed, the mother would often go along and pick out the sack with the color and design she liked best. Many mothers made children's dresses and skirts from the feed sacks. Some probably made undergarments from the feed sacks also.
