Commercial fertilizer was introduced about 1900, and accepted only as a booster for starting growth, but its use in quantities was believed destructive to the growth and maturing of garden and field crops. It took forty to fifty years of experimenting to convince the farmers of the fallacy of this unfounded belief. A few of the old timers continued with the old methods until their deaths, but their descendents accepted the new and modern trends, and by doing so got the early 1900s off to a progressive start.
