In the early days a midwife delivered numerous children. A midwife, locally called a "granny-woman" was typically an elderly woman living in the community. She had probably learned her trade by helping some older experienced woman deliver babies. Many times the midwife was called upon to get out of her bed in the wee hours of the night and rush to the bedside of an expectant mother. She was always happy to do so. The fee for the delivery of the baby was usually about two dollars. Mothers expecting a new baby would usually send their other children to the home of a family member or a neighbor until after the birth.
