Before clocks the pioneers used sun marks to tell what time it was.  Such as:  
When there was light at the edge of the porch it was twelve o'clock. When a 
shadow fell across a certain place on the back dorrsill, it was six o'clock.  
The evening, six o'clock, was at a place behind the house.
